Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 18 Review: Nanami’s Parting Whisper Mourns a Silent Hero’s Farewell

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 18 Review: In Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 18, Yuji faces his long-standing nemesis, Mahito. However, the evil reincarnate has far more sinister plans in store. The eighteenth episode, titled “Right and Wrong”, of the anime series premiered on November 23, 2023. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 (呪術廻戦 or Sorcery Fight) is directed by Sunghoo Park; the show is animated under MAPPA Studio. With Sayaka Koiso and Tadashi Hiramatsu designing the characters, Yoshimasa Terui is the sole composer of the series. Tatsuya Kitani performed the opening theme, Where Our Blue Is (青のすみか), while Soushi Sakiyama performed the ending theme, Light (燈).

The anime is scheduled for two cours, the first five episodes adapted the manga’s Hidden Inventory arc, and the upcoming eighteen other episodes will showcase the Shibuya arc. Licensed under Crunchyroll, the episodes will be available with English subtitles, and the dubbed version will be released later on.

Based on the manga series of the same name by Gege Akutami, the story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers in order to kill a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. However, the new season will consist of various aspects of the story which the audience has been wondering about. Each episode has a runtime of 20-25 minutes.

The new episode is truly one of the most emotionally charged ones of the series. Although many other episodes have had a lot of impact on the story due to sudden unpredictable turns, this one chooses to take a traditional route which manages to move everyone. It touches on heavy themes like death and regrets, making the audience think about their own lives.

A major character’s death is shown in the new episode, which leaves everyone surprised and miserable. Nanami is one of the characters that steal the show with just their mere presence. He always had a straightforward thought process, logical and rational. However, the audience finally gets to see a side of him that we never get to witness. His dreams and aspirations are as simple as any common person and that makes him extremely relatable to the viewers.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 18 Review

Kudos to the animators who are constantly overworked by the studio and given limited time to complete the project. Not only did they deliver mesmerising scenes with beautifully crafted instances, but they also took an extra step to add intricate details to all the character designs. Moreover, combining the scenes with tranquil music emphasises the juxtaposition of the two different scenarios playing simultaneously.

Nanami’s demise serves as a pivotal turning point in Yuji’s character arc, catalyzing a shift in his mindset and approach to the world of sorcery. Initially characterized by his carefree and somewhat reckless demeanour, Yuji is forced to confront the harsh realities of the jujutsu world in the aftermath. The loss of a mentor figure compels him to mature emotionally and mentally, pushing him to reevaluate his priorities and responsibilities as a Jujutsu Sorcerer.
