Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional Review: Mix of Wit and Whimsy That Only Occasionally Hits the Mark

Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional is the latest stand-up special written and performed by comedian Jenny Slate. Premiering on February 23, 2023, on Amazon Prime Video, the special is produced by Slate herself along with Elisabeth Holm and Gillian Robespierre. The show primarily explores themes of Slate’s first pregnancy, how she met her husband and her experiences with therapy. With a total runtime of 63 minutes.

Jenny Slate is a versatile actress, comedian, and writer known for her distinctively quirky humour and charming screen presence. With roles spanning from television to film, she has captivated audiences with standout performances in projects like Parks and Recreation and Obvious Child. Beyond her acting prowess, Slate showcased her comedic chops with the release of her debut stand-up comedy special, Stage Fright, in 2019. While she remains a vibrant presence in the entertainment landscape, her recent work may have fallen slightly short of hitting the comedic bullseye, leaving audiences with fewer belly laughs than expected.

Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional Review

Jenny Slate’s comedy special offers an intriguing blend of humour punctuated by a diverse range of topics, yet it’s not without its challenges. A substantial portion of her set revolves around her experiences with pregnancy and the nuances of childbirth, delving into deeply personal narratives that resonate with authenticity. While Slate’s willingness to share such intimate moments is commendable, it also presents a double-edged sword. On one hand, it allows for a unique and refreshing perspective on a topic often veiled in societal taboos. On the other hand, such personal narratives can occasionally veer into territory that may alienate or confuse certain audience members, leading to a disjointed experience.

Jenny Slate Seasoned Professional Still 1

Throughout the performance, Slate’s comedic delivery possesses moments of brilliance, where her sharp wit and keen observational humour shine through. However, these moments of hilarity are interspersed with segments that feel less cohesive, causing the overall flow of the set to suffer. While acknowledging the inherent subjectivity of comedy and the diversity of individual experiences, Slate’s material occasionally struggles to strike a balance between relatability and coherence. As a result, while her comedy special offers glimpses of comedic brilliance, it falls short of delivering consistent laughs, leaving audiences grappling with a mixed bag of content that may leave some feeling disconnected or perplexed.

While Slate’s distinctive blend of quirkiness and sincerity intermittently illuminates her comedic delivery, there are instances where her humour truly resonates, such as her candid observations on the solitary nature of childbirth despite having a loving husband, family, or brilliant doctor. Another memorable moment is her recounting of an anticipated romantic rendezvous turning into an unexpected bike ride. However, it’s worth noting that Slate’s humour can be selective, with some jokes potentially falling flat for those who cannot relate to the specific circumstances she presents. Nonetheless, her ability to find humour in life’s unexpected twists and turns adds depth and charm to her comedic repertoire.

Jenny Slate Seasoned Professional Still 2

The inclusion of her therapist in the set seemed unnecessary to me, lacking any comedic substance. It appeared as if she was exerting effort to be overly expressive, resorting to forced laughter and peculiar sounds in an attempt to elicit laughter from the audience, which at times felt like she was veering off course.

The overall experience feels fragmented. While there are moments of genuine humour, they often get overshadowed by tedious segments and pacing issues, making it challenging for the special to maintain momentum. Despite Slate’s sincere efforts to share personal anecdotes and vulnerabilities, the storytelling lacks cohesion, leaving viewers feeling disconnected. While some topics are relatable and thought-provoking, they fail to compensate for the lacklustre execution.

Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional Review: Final Thoughts

Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional is a mix of good and not-so-good moments. She shares personal stories about pregnancy and childbirth, which some people might find relatable and refreshing, but others might find confusing or off-putting. While she has some really funny bits, the show also has parts that feel awkward or boring. Some jokes hit the mark, but others miss it completely. Despite her efforts to be honest and funny, the show feels a bit all over the place. Overall, it’s a mixed bag that might leave you feeling unsure.
