Jailbreak: Love on the Run Review

What happens when the person responsible for keeping an eye on violent criminals falls in love with one of them and decides to have their happily ever after? In this extraordinary true story, we see the surprising facts surrounding the relationship between corrections officer Vicky White and Casey White (no, they are not related), a man in jail awaiting trial for capital murder. The documentary starts from the start, with Casey’s incarceration and both of their backstories and glides into their relationship, their running away and their eventual arrest.

One of the best things about this documentary film is probably the fact that it is told through the lens of Vicky’s colleagues and her conversations with Casey using the prison phone. As we all know, those conversations are always monitored and recorded and they provide a fascinating and deep look into their relationship, leaving you stumped. These conversations, which apparently have not been released to the public before this, fill in the gaps that her colleagues cannot provide and, as a viewer, you can’t help but look on in astonishment.

The phone conversations are shocking to listen to, not because listening to a corrections officer having a relationship with an inmate is shocking, but because of the explicit conversations that these two have. It comes out later on that they might have had physical relations inside the jail as well, which adds to the surprise element and confuses you even more. I mean, sure, love can blossom in the weirdest of places but the entire thing is just so bizarre that it’s hard to come to terms with it. The documentary does a fantastic job of peppering these conversations in the correct places, reeling us in with them while giving us real footage from the cameras in the jail.

These videos help to string the audio together in a coherent way, leaving us feeling rather dumbfounded the more we watch the Vicky White movie. Jailbreak Netflix also validates our confusion by giving us an account of Vicky’s colleagues who are as confused as us. THe feelings of betrayal and heartbreak and evident in their statements and the shock and sadness that they feel are almost saddening to watch. It’s clear that all of these people were fond of her thanks to her commitment to her job, one that she held for 17 years, and the dedication that she had to uphold the law. And now for all of that to come crashing down in such a devastating way is a visceral shock, one that you can feel in every scene.

The film also showcases some surprising parts of this madness. Other than the romance, the different moving parts associated with Vicky running away with Casey after retiring from her strenuous job are nothing short of fascinating and add a layer of intrigue to an already insane tale. It’s fascinating watching the effects their relationship had on the other inmates and the small changes in both of their habits that the others had brushed away previously. Plus, the planning that went into orchestrating this Bonny and Clyde scenario is absolutely bewitching to watch and the documentary does a great job of breaking all the little pieces down for us.

Final Thoughts

Jailbreak: Love on the Run is a fascinating watch. Its 88-minute runtime is an arresting time not just because the story itself is so mysterious and dumbfounding, but also because the elements of the story are told in a way that keeps your emotions and interests heightened throughout the runtime. Casey and Vicky White’s story is an enigma and a half and the documentary does a great job of capturing that.
