What was Project Starling?

The film starts with an assassination, and every character jumps into trying to stop Liam Crown. Digging further, Greer reveals everything about Project Starling, a mysterious black-ops network that initially worked as a counterterrorism unit that invariably went wrong. After an asset died, it was seemingly shut down, but Crown had been running it behind everyone’s back with a skewed idea of taking care of the world by doing whatever it takes. Crown justified its actions by using global instability and manufactured crises to justify its illegal operations.

Through further investigation, Ryan and his team figure out that Starling had been reactivating terrorist groups to prove a point that, without Starling, the world would be a worse place without any stability or safety. Either way, Crown refuses to back down and threatens more destruction if they don’t hand over something Nigel had.

How Does Jack Become Involved?

Jack is pulled back into operation by Greer, but he stays to protect the nation from Crown’s destruction. Unfortunately, the more he stays, the more he realises that there’s so much he doesn’t know about the CIA and Greer. He continues to look into Nigel with Marlow and realises that Nigel never had a hard drive; it was a server that hosted all of Crown’s sensitive information about his operation. This is what Crown was after all along, but didn’t know. With this new intel, he decides to continue what Nigel was doing in Dubai – transmit all the data live.

What Happens in the End?

In a shocking turn of events, Marlow and Jack realise that Andrew Spear and Crown have been working together all along, and decide to go off to Dubai to finish the task and take Crown down once and for all. In an action-packed ending, both Crown’s team and Jack’s team arrive at the place where Nigel had hidden the intel, and as they start to transmit it back to the CIA, Jack and Emma face off against Crown and his men. In a dramatic conclusion, Greer shoots Crown down with a helicopter, just as Jack and Emma were almost killed.

What does the Ending Mean For Jack?

The ending puts Jack back into the game as he realises that there’s something more than him worth fighting for. Although he was questioning his role and the validity of organisations like the CIA after learning about Starling, he realised that people like him are needed in the field to fight against evil that will always exist in society.

Is a Sequel On the Horizon?

Although Crown has been killed, we see a huge number of operatives who have been working with Project Starling, people like
Andrew Spear in the MI6. Thus, there’s definitely a possibility for further adventure for Jack, whose collaboration with Emma also seems like a possibility.
