IT – Welcome to Derry Episode 8 Recap
Mysterious thick smoke engulfs everything in Derry and makes everything lose colour as people scramble to find safety. Derry’s adults are taken hostage by Pennywise, and he terrorises the kids in the high school and eventually kidnaps them. Lilly and her friends, meanwhile, are at their hiding spot and are shocked to see the foggy town.
When they go into town, they realise that Pennywise might have taken all of their friends hostage and rush to save them. Realising that Will is missing as well, the three girls scramble to find their friends, while Leroy gets a terrifying phone call from Pennywise that sends him over the edge. He rushes to find Dick, who is suffering from his own demons and on the brink of ending his own life, and begs him to find Will.

They go to meet Rose and Charlotte, and the former tells them that the only way to defeat Pennywise is for Dick to find the dagger before it’s too late. Dick locates the dagger with Ronnie and her friends, and the adults rush to find them. Rose mentions that the dagger, being taken away from its home, will drive the person holding it insane, as we see Lilly start to hallucinate from its powers.
Her friends help her snap out of the dagger’s powers before they follow the possessed children and fight with Pennywise. After a terrifying ordeal, just as he’s about to kill Marge, Pennywise stops in his tracks, allowing them to get away before reuniting with Leroy and the others. The other kids, too, snap out of the possession and are taken to safety, leaving Leroy and Taniel to walk towards the tree.

Just as they get close, though, the military starts to shoot them, killing Taniel and injuring Leroy. He is caught, but he hands the shard over to the kids, who make a run for it. Meanwhile, Pennywise is still stuck, having been taken “hostage” by Dick as Francis desperately tries to use Pennywise for his own nefarious purpose.
Pennywise eventually realises that Dick’s to blame for his predicament and snaps out of his hold and kills Francis when he tries to act tough. As things get worse very fast, Pennywise rushes towards the kids while the adults fight with the military to save their lives. Thankfully, before all is lost, the kids can put the shard back into its place, resulting in Pennywise finally being defeated.

In the aftermath, everyone mourns their losses and pays their respects to Rich. Later, Marge tells Lilly that Pennywise told her that he will kill her son in the future and that his death is also his birth. She wonders if Pennywise can go back in time and go after them before they were born, but Lilly realises that it’s not their fight in that case, leaving the two to sit in tense silence.
Elsewhere, Rose asks Charlotte and Leroy to join her in keeping Derry safe, but they decide to move on from Derry and live a more peaceful life. However, Rose’s offer strikes a chord with the Hanlon family, and they eventually agree to stay back. It’s a bittersweet goodbye as Ronnie leaves and Will hopes to keep their communication alive, even though she might forget.
26 years later, Beverly Marsh mourns over a relative’s suicide in the hospital as a creepy older woman reminds her no one in really dies in Derry.
Final Thoughts

What a fantastic episode this was as it brings an end to this exciting new world of the IT franchise. This was a thrilling and interesting chapter that answers so many questions and asks a few more, leaving us to wait patiently for chapter two. The best part, of course, is Bill Skarsgård who, as Pennywise, is terrifying as always. The practical effects are simply fantastic as well and adds a lot of thrill to the runtime. Viewers will fid themselves on edge and emotional throughout the runtime.
Overall, a great ending in my books.
