Hunter With a Scalpel Episode 7 Recap

The episode opens with Se-hyun waking up in a pool of blood as Jo-gyun, elsewhere, stores all of her belongings neatly in a box. As she washes away the blood, Jung-hyun and team decide to start searching for the girl, now a woman, who was at the centre of the murders all those years ago. The police also figure out that the first and the third victims have one thing in common – their financial records overlap in Jo-gyun’s laundry business, and although Park Se-ok mentions that the woman looks like Se-hyun, the others don’t believe him. But Jung-hyun has his doubts.

Reeling from the confrontation, Se-hyun thinks about her sister Eun-seo and the trauma from her childhood with her father, while Jung-hyun and Chang-jin visit Jo-gyun to talk about the case. There, Jung-hyun sees a shift in the laundry owner that others might not have noticed before. When he looks around, he finds the black hat and clothes that the perpetrator was wearing in the Min-ho case.

Jung-hyun shares his doubts with Chang-jin, who, although sceptical at first, slowly comes around to believing him when he brings up Ji-gyun and the perpetrator’s impaired walking. Later that night, Jo-gyun calls Se-hyun once again to taunt her, and she comes up with another plan to stop her father’s madness before it destroys everything in its path. Meanwhile, Jung-hyun’s suspicions rise about Se-hyun’s involvement in the case.

That night, Se-hyun, on Jo-gyun’s insistence, goes to collect DNA samples from a man’s house and finds his dead body there that her father has left behind for her to clean up. But, as it turns out, he wasn’t dead and eventually attacks Se-hyun for breaking into his house. Her father clearly ambushed her and now uses Se-eun to plant several cameras around the property to blackmail her later on. Eventually, Se-hyun ends up killing the man after her mask slips and she looks at a nearby mirror, realising that she has turned into her father.

Listen, there is a lot of crap that I am willing to overlook in a lot of shows if the worldbuilding is good enough and makes sense in the context. But I just can’t get behind Se-hyun’s insanity and where this drama is going with it. You can’t tell me that Se-hyun is working for the law when she’s not helping the honest police officer who wants to do right, and this is some convoluted way for her to get revenge and stop the killings. I mean, she just killed a person, so now what? Are we expected to forgive and forget because “plot armour”?

There is no way the series can spin this tale that looks good for Se-hyun, and if anything, I am questioning her intelligence and wonder why I am watching this show. The episode is illogical and infuriating.
