Human: A Medical Thriller That Tests Your Morality

Disney+ Hotstar’s new show- Human is all about crossing the black and white border to meet the greys areas in society and, within yourself. The series essentially being a medical drama also doubles as a social thriller that augments the horrors of drug trials on people all over the globe.

We meet Dr Gauri Nath (played by Shah), a philanthropist and charitable woman who aims to make the world a better place and, runs the multispecialty hospital- Manthan. Our other main, Dr Saira Sabarwal (played by Kulhari), is a headstrong woman who is the new doctor recruited in Manthan. However, running simultaneously in the storyline is also the plot of drug trials being tested out on humans at an unapproved medical stage to get the drug sanctioned and sold at a quick pace than expected.

As unmonitored drug trials, rage on our female leads come together only to have the land under their feet slipped away and thrown in murky waters. With the dark horrors of the medical world surface, who will be brave enough to stand tall and be the one to expose the truth? Or, will everyone be consumed by the dangerous web of lies and deception to sink deeper in the neverending well of corruption? Well, Human waits to test you to invest yourself and find out.

It is the actors in the show and, their brilliance that keeps you hooked to the end of the show. Shefali Shah is tremendous and, every word of praise will fall short for what the actress has delivered. The character of Dr Gauri Nath is so cryptic yet clear, that it has become unique to Shefali Shah and, there is no one who could have done better than the Ajeeb Daastaans‘ actress. Kriti Kulhari is praiseworthy and, embodies the strength that is required to play the character of Dr. Saira Sabrawal. However, it does not end here as everyone starting from Ram Kapoor to Vishal Jethwa awe you in their roles.

Yet, there seems to be something amiss. The show does not hold back when it comes to building you a story that will constantly challenge you. But, the overlapping plots and, undistributed timing to establish each one is something you would hold against it while watching. As much as the show is enjoyable, it also annoys you with too many characters intervening to say their story louder. SonyLIV’s Whistleblower is a similar example where the plots are all cooked unevenly and, sometimes, unnecessarily.

Human Series: Final Verdict

Overall, Human series is a commendable attempt to put on screen a ghastly truth that has never been seen before. It is remarkable how the plotline intermingles with themes of class hierarchy, mental health, politics, the ignorance faced by people from the LGBTQ+ community and, what really is the world behind the white coats. The show stands in between the thin line of stunning and average and, it is the audience’s pick on which side they belong.
