House of the Dragon Season 2 Ending Explained: As Season 2 comes to an end today, it doesn’t quite give us the dramatic finale we might have expected. This season has been a slow build-up, focusing more on intricate planning and plotting rather than big battles or exciting scenes. We saw very few moments of dragon fights throughout the season. Instead, the ending brings a mix of surprising revelations, intense confrontations, and changes in alliances. These elements create a lot of anticipation for what will happen next in the series.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Ending Explained
What Happened to King Aegon?

In the final moments of the season, King Aegon II’s precarious position becomes increasingly untenable. After a dramatic sequence where Ulf flies over King’s Landing, creating chaos below, Aemond grows anxious. His fear is palpable; despite possessing the largest dragon, he faces the daunting reality of fighting against six other dragons. Aemond’s desperation leads him to seek his sister Helaena’s support in building his own dragon army. Helaena, who is reluctant to engage in further bloodshed, provides a chilling prophecy: Aemond will die at the God’s Eye while Aegon II remains seated on a wooden throne. Enraged, Aemond retaliates by burning down a town in the Crownlands, showcasing his ruthless determination.
Amidst this turmoil, King Aegon II, who has been rendered physically and emotionally scarred, decides to abandon his kingdom. Under Larys’s advice, Aegon flees to the East, seeking refuge and regrouping rather than facing the inevitable conflict head-on. His departure marks a significant blow to House Green and further complicates the power dynamics in the realm.
Was Rhaenyra Able to Take King’s Landing?
Rhaenyra has been consolidating her position throughout the season, but the finale pushes her into a critical juncture. At Dragonstone, she deals with former friend Alicent, who proposes a renegotiation of terms now that Aegon II is incapacitated. Alicent’s offer to open the gates of King’s Landing for Rhaenyra to seize the throne is met with scepticism. Rhaenyra, still adamant about not sparing Aegon II’s life, views Alicent’s move as insufficient. The battle for King’s Landing remains unresolved, and Rhaenyra’s path to the throne is fraught with continued conflict.

Daemon experiences a dramatic transformation in the finale. After a season of haunting visions and introspection at Harrenhal, Daemon undergoes a profound change. A mystical vision involving a weirwood tree reveals a montage of significant figures and events, including a future where Rhaenyra sits on the Iron Throne. This vision brings Daemon to a new understanding of the realm’s fate and his own role within it. He pledges his loyalty to Rhaenyra, signifying a full-circle redemption from his earlier rebellious stance. Daemon’s newfound devotion is meant to unify the fractured realm, but his sudden shift leaves some viewers questioning the authenticity of his transformation.
Corlys Velaryon known as the Sea Snake, faces his own challenges as he prepares for war. Despite his efforts to set sail and confront his enemies, he finds himself at odds with his son, Alyn (Abubakar Salim). Their strained relationship is highlighted in a tense exchange where Alyn expresses his resentment towards his father’s past neglect. Corlys’s attempts to mend fences and offer support are met with frustration, revealing the deep scars left by years of estrangement and hardship. Corlys’s determination to honour his late wife with the ship’s name, “The Queen Who Never Was,” adds a poignant layer to his journey, underscoring the personal stakes of the conflict.

The finale sets the stage for the upcoming war, with Rhaenyra and her Dragonriders preparing for their next move. The final montage captures key moments, including Otto Hightower’s imprisonment, Daeron’s dragon flying over the Hightower army, and Corlys setting out to sea. These scenes suggest that the conflict is far from over and that new alliances and battles will shape the future of Westeros. Season 2 didn’t provide us with the final battle, so Rhaenyra has still not conquered King’s Landing. For that, we’ll need to wait until the next season.
