House of the Dragon Episode 1 Review Contains No Spoilers
Disney+ Hotstar’s House of the Dragon Episode 1 begins with Jaehaerys I Targaryen and his council electing King Viserys I Targaryen as the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms. Years later, Viserys has to announce his successor. He has a daughter named Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Viserys awaits his wife to give birth to a son who will take the throne as the King after him.
Just like GoT, we see the desire or greed for the throne even in the prequel series. Viserys’ brother Daemon Targaryen is full of confidence that he will be the heir to the Iron Throne after Viserys. But the council is not a fan of Daemon because of his reckless and violent nature.
The first 30 minutes of episode 1 left us wondering – Will King Viserys I Targaryen have a son who will be his successor? What will this mean for his daughter Rhaenrya? What will be Daemon’s move to make sure things go his way? Many questions arise, and some are answered, while the rest will be answered as the series progresses.
Game of Thrones focused on the Starks, Targaryens, Lannisters, Baratheons and various families. But in HoTD, the show is solely focused on the Targaryens. It is set 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s birth. We will find out what happens to the dragons, what led to the fall of such a powerful royal family and much more.

Having a show focused only on one major family allows the makers to write solid characters. It’s something we see happening in the first episode itself. As a viewer, you already admire Princess Rhaenyra. You are fascinated and curious to see what Daemon will do. You wonder what’s going on in the mind of Lady Alicent Hightower.
The first episode manages to pack in that excitement that you will be waiting for the next episode. It sucks to wait another week to know what’s going to happen next. The climax in episode one is intriguing and teases us with a major catastrophe ahead.
Coming to performances, Milly Alcock as young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is a sight to behold in every scene. She acts through her expressions in many scenes and yet conveys what’s going on in her mind. Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen is one of the best castings in the show. I know I am saying this too soon. But once you watch the episode, you will understand why I already made such a big statement. The rest of the actors look promising and play their parts well.
GoT was also known for its gory violence and nudity. We see some nudity and lots of brutality in the first episode. This is just the beginning.
