House of the Dragon: All About the New Cast and Characters Revealed in the Show

House of the Dragon is successfully running for the past few weeks. Based on George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood,’ the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. While we bid adieu to the young versions of the characters last week, the latest episode introduced us to a new recast and characters.

Rhaenyra Targaryen Played by Emma D’Arcy

Rhaenyra Targaryen is the first-born daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Aemma Arryn. As a strong-willed and independent young woman, her father named her heir to the Iron Throne. Married to Ser Laenor Velaryon, she is the mother of three sons: Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey.

Though there is growing speculation about her children’s legitimacy, Rhaenyra maintains Laenor is their father. Her sworn protector was Ser Harwin Strong and the two shared an unspoken bond. Rhaenyra Targaryen dragon is named Syrax.

Laenor Velaryon Played by John Macmillan

The son of Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Ser Laenor is a powerful knight. Husband and king consort to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the pair have three sons. Laenor loves his children and the question of their legitimacy does not bother him as he too has secrets of his own. Like his Targaryen mother, Laenor Velaryon is a dragon rider and rides Seasmoke.

Jacaerys Velaryon Played by Leo Hart

Jacaerys Velaryon often referred to as Jace, is the first-born son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon. As Rhaenyra’s oldest male heir, he stands to inherit the Iron Throne. Due to his dark brown hair, rumours in the realm question his true parentage. A dragon rider like his mother, Jace rides Vermax.

Lucerys Velaryon Played by Harvey Sadler

Lucerys Velaryon, also known as Luke, is the second son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon. Like his elder brother Jace, Luke’s similarities to Ser Harwin Strong are noted, if not spoken of, by the realm.

Alicent Hightower Played by Olivia Cooke

Queen Alicent Hightower is the wife of King Viserys I and the mother of Aegon, Helaena, and Aemond Targaryen. She maintains a fierce allegiance to her house and family, causing her rivalry with Princess Rhaenyra to grow. Their rift has spilt over into their children as well, threatening the stability of the realm.

Alicent wore a stunning green dress to the welcome dinner for Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon’s wedding celebrations. An act of rebellion, it is a symbol of support and loyalty for her family, the Hightowers.

Aegon Targaryen Played by Ty Tennant

Aegon Targaryen is the firstborn son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Targaryen. Prince Aegon’s incurable indolence and indifference to his royal duties prevent him from taking an active part in the affairs of the kingdom, but many believe him to be the rightful heir as Viserys’ oldest living son. Like his father, Aegon is a dragon rider and bonded with the dragon Sunfyre.

Helaena Targaryen Played by Evie Allen

Helaena Targaryen is the only daughter and middle child of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Targaryen. She has a unique interest in bugs and often speaks in cryptic language.

Aemond Targaryen Played by Leo Ashton

Aemond Targaryen is the second-born son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Targaryen. He is petulant and complains about not having a dragon.

Laena Velaryon Played by Nanna Blondell

Laena Velaryon was the wife of Prince Daemon Targaryen, mother to Baela and Rhaena, and a valiant dragon rider. She was the daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. She died during her third pregnancy, before bringing the baby to term.

Though she did not bond with a dragon at birth, in her teens, Laena Velaryon claimed Vhagar, the Queen of All Dragons.

Baela Targaryen Played by Shani Smethurst

Baela Targaryen is the oldest daughter of Lady Laena Velaryon and Prince Daemon Targaryen. Along with her younger sister Rhaena, Baela was raised in Pentos, away from both her parents’ families. A brave dragon rider like her mother Laena, Baela rides Moondancer.

Rhaena Targaryen Played by Eva Ossei-Gerning

Rhaena Targaryen is the daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon. Unlike her older sister Baela, Rhaena’s dragon egg has not hatched.

Ser Harwin Strong Played by Ryan Corr

Ser Harwin Strong was the eldest son of Lyonel Strong and heir to Harrenhal. He was known by his nickname ‘Breakbones’ and was said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms. He was a fierce protector and became Lord Commander of the City Watch.

The constant allegations of his relationship with Princess Rhaenyra and her sons ultimately led to his downfall in King’s Landing. He returned to his seat at Harrenhal, where he was tragically killed in a fire.

Larys Strong Played by Matthew Needham

Larys Strong is the younger son of Lyonel Strong and the brother of Ser Harwin Strong. Although no one says it to his face, many refer to him as ‘The Clubfoot’ because of a birth abnormality that causes him to walk with a limp. Though cunning and remorseless, he is often overlooked because of his small, sickly stature.

His budding alliance with Queen Alicent puts him in a powerful position in the realm. Larys uses this short staff, inset with a golden firefly, for support.
