His Dark Materials Season 3 Finale Ending Explained

The Botanic Garden marked the end of His Dark Materials Season 3. The ending was quite bittersweet for both the characters and the fans. In the second last episode, we saw Asriel and Marisa sacrifice themselves while killing Metatron leaving Lyra and Will’s fate undecided and the war finally over.

After Will and Lyra meet with Mary, the latter reveals to our protagonists the true nature of Dust which is basically the consciousness of the world and cannot be either good or bad, as debated throughout the show. However, we saw how Dust was lessening in the world and Angel Xaphania informs Mary that even Lyra and Will’s love cannot be enough to sustain the Dust. To let the Dust settle, all the windows to every other world need to be closed so that Dust does not seep out of their Universe to others.

Moreover, the cuts into the other worlds are responsible for the creation of spectres which are deadly. Thus, prompting Will to close all portals and break the knife. So, what about Lyra and Will? Well, even after their kiss, the two are not destined to stay together it seems as if one cannot survive in the other’s world for their daemons will be unable to live longer that way.

Accepting the harsh truth of their lives, Lyra and Will promise to live their lives to the fullest and visit the Land of the Dead and be free from the land through their stories and go on to meet each other in the Mulefa world. Until then, they decide to visit their spot at noon on a midsummer’s day every year for the rest of their lives. Ultimately, Will is seen returning to his world with Mary and reuniting with his mother. He also breaks the Subtle Knife.
