Hijack Episode 7 Review: A “Shared” Landing With a Twist

Hijack Episode 7 Review: The end of one problem shall be the beginning of another. Kingdom Airlines A330 Flight KA29 seems to be cursed with this bane. While the hijackers have been overwhelmed by the passengers, one of the latter has taken control of the flight. Her identity is unknown. Her motive is unknown. Is she a terrorist? No. And this makes it much worse, for London itself. How will Sam Nelson deal with this as the flight enters London airspace?

Hijack has been written by George Kay and directed by Jim Field Smith. It stars Idris Elba as professional negotiator Sam Nelson, along with Neil Maskell, Ben Miles, Max Beesley, Eve Myles, Archie Panjabi, and Christine Adams.

Hijack Episode 7 Recap

The Home Secretary and the foreign secretary find out that the worst outcome for the plane will be the best outcome for the organized crime group (OCG) financially because they have bet the other way. They got the word out about the hijack because they knew it would affect the shares of Kingdom Airlines. The two officials are in dire straits because while the home Secretary would rather have the plane shot down by jets rather than let it crash in the middle of London, the foreign secretary isn’t willing to blow the plane up and kill all those people inside it.

The woman has locked herself in the cockpit and changed the course of the plane. And none of the people inside the plane or on the ground knows what’s going on, not even the hijackers (all of whom are now held by the passengers). Sam eventually gets to know that the hijackers have her family hostage. She is supposed to receive a message from one of the hijackers and that’s supposed to be the end of all this. She would land the plane.

Edgar Janssen, the guy who was supposed to send the message to the woman flying the plane, is shot and killed on John Bailey-Brown’s order. Edgar was delaying the plan for the sake of making more money which would end with the crash of the plane. This was closing their window of escape, and thus Bailey makes the call.

Marsha informs Daniel about a suspicious call confirming Sam’s address where Kai presently is. He calls Kai, who is held at gunpoint, as he answers the call. After a distress signal from Kai, in the form of a code that the guys in blue don’t understand, Daniel calls for backup, and the two guys are caught and put in cuffs. Kai is finally safe.

After managing to remember the name of the woman flying the plane, Sam manages to persuade her (Amanda) to open the cockpit door and give her the assurance, via the home secretary, that she won’t be arrested and will get to see her daughter, who is safe too. With assistance from Alice Sinclair, Amanda and Sam somehow land or rather crash-land the plane that had run out of fuel. All the hijackers are arrested. The passengers can finally get to go home to their loved ones.

Hijack Episode 7 Review

The event of Episode 7 occurred in haste as the makers intended to sync the number of episodes of the series with the flight time between Dubai and Heathrow, London, i.e. 7 hours. One more episode would have done the ending justice because everything seems hurried. While it does add to the urgency keeping in mind that the plane is running out of time and fuel, the pace of the rest of the episodes makes this one appear hastened.

As far as the acting is concerned, everyone has done their bit just fine. But I will have to hand it to the makers to make sure that the emotional arc of the plot, as we see in this episode, hasn’t been allowed to take over the urgency of the situation. Both go hand in hand, and the possibility of the crash does provide a better catharsis that comes with the landing.

Yet, one more episode wherein Sam had to figure out a way to find out who the woman in the cockpit is would perhaps have offered a better ending to a show that had been steady all this while. It would also have added to the unpredictability, which is one of the main aspects of the show; if not, it’s the main aspect. Overall, Hijack is definitely a good watch if you have the right amount of patience, quite like Sam Nelson himself.

The new episode is now streaming on Apple TV+.
