Denzel Washington returns to the big screen with a compelling narrative and makes a splash at the Cannes Film Festival! Washington reunites with director Spike Lee for this neo-noir thriller, which is a contemporary reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low. Set against the backdrop of the vibrant and bustling New York City, the film delves into themes of morality, social disparity and personal sacrifice.

In the film, Washington portrays David King, a formidable music mogul whose life is thrown into chaos and disarray when his godson is kidnapped instead of his own son. With a $17.5 million ransom demand to handle and a life on the line, King faces a dilemma like no other – pay the ransom for someone else’s son or let him die and carry the guilt with him forever. The film explores the complexities of privilege, loyalty and ethical responsibilities.
The film boasts a stellar cast that is sure to enhance the viewing experience. Ilfenesh Hadera plays Pam King, David’s supportive wife; Jeffrey Wright takes on the role of Paul Christopher, a seasoned detective; and A$AP Rocky appears as Yung Felony, a character entangled in the criminal underworld. Other notable inclusions are Ice Spice, Aubrey Joseph, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, LaChanze, Michael Potts and Wendell Pierce.
According to critics, there are several standout scenes in the narrative that will grip viewers in a complicated web. The seedy underbelly of the underworld will definitely paint a vivid picture and set the scene for King to make some difficult decisions. However, critics also pointed out several issues in the film, but the overall consensus does seem to point towards a satisfying adaptation of Kurosawa’s suspenseful plot to a modern urban setting.
Interestingly enough, Washington received an honorary Palme d’Or, recognising his outstanding contributions to cinema. It was a complete surprise for the actor, who received the award from festival director Thierry Frémaux, who passed it to him by Spike Lee. Washington’s emotional response was the highlight of the evening.
Highest 2 Lowest is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on August 22, 2025, distributed by A24, following which it will release on Apple TV+ from September 5, 2025.
