Heart Shot (2022) Review: Elena Heuzé and Nia Sondaya Short Leaves a Lot Unsaid

Netflix describes the movie as:

In this short film, teenagers Nikki and Sam are in love and planning their future together — until Nikki’s dangerous past returns to threaten everything.

The genius of short films is that they can bring forth the story of a feature-length film into the confines of 20 minutes or less. There’s an appeal to getting a whole host of information in a small amount of time – you feel a whole host of said in the subtlest and the most nuanced way.

Heart Shot starts off way too sweetly for it to escalate into what it becomes. One moment you’re in bed with two women having some issues and in the next, it’s a James Bond movie. In the midst of being confused about what the actual heck is going on, you are left a bit unsatisfied since the movie is just so quick and tackles so many different things.

Since it’s only 19 minutes, saying anything more about the plot would give away spoilers. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to get into the story much without discussing some of the bizarre things. So, I’ll keep this short.

The movie is exciting and, as I said earlier, goes from quiet, dreamy, teenage love to blood-pumping adrenaline rush in a matter of seconds. The transition is unexpected and thus leaves you feeling light-headed. What does this twist imply? Is this a cult? Is it like Stranger Things? Is this some form of terrorism? We don’t get answers. The open ended-ness of the movie, personally, leaves a bit too much unanswered. This one will keep you guessing what’s going on for some time simply because it literally answers no questions. In the end, it gets on your nerves – how am I supposed to derive inferences if I literally have no information to derive them from?

Summing up: Heart Shot

At 19 minutes, Heart Shot is a quick and easy watch that keeps it a bit too subtle for my liking. Let me know in the comments what your theories are regarding Nikki’s secret!

Heart Shot is streaming on Netflix.

  1. It could have at least made it a good 30 minutes explaining the end, it just pretty much left you hanging it would have been a good short film if not for the way it escalated and then ended with no answers
