HBO’s Succession Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: Secession

Succession Season 3 Episode 1 picks up right on cue after the rather sly end of the previous season. According to the ending episode of Succession 2, Kendall has blamed the entire criminal activity going on the cruise line scandal on Logan and has come clean instead of being the family’s “blood sacrifice”, which, for all the obvious reasons, has put the company in jeopardy. In the pilot episode of the third season, we see how Logan and his kids try to recover Waystar RoyCo from the clutches of the media vultures and if the empire survives this drastic fall.

The former cast reprise in their main roles which includes: Brian Cox as CEO of Waystar RoyCo Logan Roy and his kids- Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy, and Sarah Snook as Shiv (aka Siobhan Roy), Alan Ruck as Connor Roy/ We also see Matthew Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans (Shiv’s Husband), Nicholas Braun as Greg Hirsch (Logan’s Grandnephew), and Hiam Abbass as Marcia Roy (Logan’s wife). The runtime for the episodes is approximately 55 minutes to 1 hour.

Succession Season 3 Episode 1: Saving Waystar RoyCo

This episode essentially focuses on the after-effects of Kendall’s call out from last season. We see Logan with his kids (expect Kendall and Connor) and his close associates looking for a safe harbour. Meanwhile, Kendall sets up a temporary base of operations to make this public image clear of the drug relapse he’s gone through.

As the episode progresses, the tension rises as the Roys and the executives of Waystar RoyCo. find it hard to stay afloat amidst all the scandal that can land all of them in prison. Kendall gets back into his composure from Succession Season 1 when he was planning to put a vote of no confidence against his father, Logan Roy by swaying the board members. In meantime, the most loyal member of the Roy family, Shiv seems to be swayed by some decision making after Logan decides to temporarily step back from the position of CEO.

By the end of the episode, which is indefinitely Logan Roy versus Kendall Roy once again, we see Shiv taking some steps we did not think she would by the start of the episode which can change the upcoming events in the world of Waystar RoyCo and the Roy family. Moreover, the question of who will be named the next CEO and succeed Logan Roy is still in the dark which might get answered this coming season.

Succession Season 3 Episode 1: Final Thoughts

Succession has held its name high due to the beautiful satire it always prevails to be. Season 3 promises to be no less. Now, with Kendall more pumped than ever and Greg by his side (a character whose improvement has been tremendous), we are going to have to hold our breathes for the showdown between Logan and Kendall. However, seems like this season Shiv can definitely sway the game, for good, with her politically connections and excellent strategy making skills.
