Haseen Dillruba starring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, Harshvardhan Rane, Aditya Srivastava, and Yamini Das, is out on Netflix. Written by Kanika Dhillon, Vinil Mathew has directed the mystery thriller film. The film’s music is composed by Amit Trivedi.

  • Haseen Dillruba Release Date

    2 July 2021

  • Haseen Dillruba Runtime

    136 minutes

The teaser and trailers show that Taapsee Pannu’s Rani and Rishi, played by Vikrant Massey, are in an unhappy marriage. She meets Neel (Harshvardhan Rane), and their lust story creates trouble in her married life. However, when Rishi dies in a blast, the triangle love story turns into a twisted tale of murder.

Haseen Dillruba Review: In-depth Analysis

The opening scene of Haseen Dillruba shows Rani feeding food to the stray dogs outside her house. Suddenly, there’s an explosion in the house, and Rishi dies. The cops only find his hand that has Rani’s name inked. It takes just a few minutes for the cops to blame Rani for conspiring her husband’s death as everyone in Jwalapur knew about her affair with Neel. What follows is her investigation and truth about Rani-Rishi’s married life.

Kanika Dhillon is known for writing stories that feature headstrong and lively female characters. She has tried to do the same in Netflix’s Haseen Dillruba. But the entire world of Rani-Rishi-Neel appears made-up. In the film, Rani is a massive fan of crime novel writer Dinesh Pandit. At one point, I thought it was a teenager’s dream about Pandit’s novel. Hence, the approach is silly and shallow.

Haseen Dillruba Review: Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey

Haseen Dillruba film has a dialogue that goes ‘Pagalpan ki hadd se na guzre toh wo pyaar kaisa’. It means that, if love doesn’t push you to the brink of insanity, it’s not true love. Kanika Dhillon has taken this line too seriously and presented us not a twisted, but a toxic tale of a love story. There’s no doubt that infidelity can shatter a person. But romanticising the idea of punishing the other person and accepting the torture because that’s what ‘madness in love’ means is utter crap!

Amid all the not-so-twisted, loving and thrilling saga, what made me happy is Amit Trivedi’s music. The songs have the right amount of romance and passion, which the film’s love stories miss out on. Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey give a solid performance together. Harshvardhan Rane, Aditya Srivastava, and Yamini Das do a good job too. But the caricaturish approach doesn’t give them enough room to showcase their potential entirely.

Overall, the Netflix mystery thriller doesn’t even pack cheap thrills. You wish to be surprised by the climax twist. But amid all the toxic drama and overdone formula of love-lust-revenge, you figure out how it’s going to end. Watch Gone Girl instead.
