Hack My Home Review: Gets Your Tools Out and Your Creative Juices Flowing

Hack My Home Review: In this home renovation series, Ati Williams will be working on the construction, Jessica L Banks will be handling the engineering of the house, Mikel Welch will be looking into the designing aspect of the job, and Brooks Atwood will be working on innovating the houses for a better solution. Produced by Anne Hill, Ross Breitenbach, Nicole Elliott, Ming Lee Howell and Christian Sarabia, Rebecca Rosichan served as the casting supervisor on the show, bringing the experts who would make these homes pop.

There are so many ideas even within the home renovation genre, and this series does a good job of exploring one of them. Putting these four experts together was a good idea. They are all professionally trained and educated from pristine institutions. Additionally, taking up the challenge to constantly pump out innovative solutions is difficult when the simple solutions are often right in front of them. Fortunately, the patrons of their service were chosen with such careful care that their efforts were valued appropriately.

Every house seen in this series has something that makes it fruitful enough to change with just the appropriate challenge to give the experts an opportunity to work their magic. It was also brilliant to see that these families came from various sociocultural backgrounds. It wasn’t something that was made obvious (which gave them inadvertent brownie points) and flowed seamlessly in the narrative. Their cultural backgrounds may have come into the house, but it wasn’t something that defined the narrative of the episode.

Focusing on a single place in every episode gave this the YouTube feeling when we see home renovation. For the longest time, Mr Kate on the free video streaming platform was the gateway into the home renovation sphere. They did a brilliant job on that platform, changing people’s houses completely. This show showed more focused projects and appreciated the importance of having other people help so the experts could focus on making the best out of the space they were given.

It was also super interesting to see how most of the families were just looking for a better place to live, and the solutions were not always in-the-box thinking. Even the experts share how their innovative solutions came from places across the country and required some help from people who could make it possible. Most of the solutions shown in this allow people the chance to look at their own homes and implement some of them.

The reality of why this series works is absolute access. Experts were able to bring walls down, change the colours of the house and altogether exercise complete creative control over the elements that would make this home better to live in. No idea seemed too far-fetched, and even if it did, the solutions were always readily available. The only thing that really made me cringe was the fact that we were back to some trope-like representations of people who would get into this field. It felt like Queer Eye was back at it.

Hack My Home Review: Final Thoughts

Through all of this criticism, however, is the fact that the show remains incredibly enticing to watch. It keeps you hooked and is the perfect brain off, just vibes feeling show. The experts are fun, the houses are interesting, and the change is magnificent. The deep internal feeling to fix something has never been satiated this well because this isn’t just a face-lift but a full gut check. Everyone’s personality in the series jumps out, and their expertise is also well-placed to make living spaces better.

The other reason why this show is brilliant is that they constantly try to play to the longevity of their solutions. Making sure that something lasted long enough was enough reason to think of something new. The diversity in the family model and the addition of this innovative thinking make this show definitely one to watch.

Hack My Home is currently streaming on Netflix.
