Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Post Credits Scenes Explained: Will the Squad of Misfits Reunite in the Future?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 post credits scenes prove that this isn’t the end of the road for the Guardians despite the third chapter of their saga being the final one, here’s why!

Releasing in theatres on May 5, 2023, the movie has been directed and written by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Will Poulter, and Chukwudi Iwuji in stellar roles, with Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel voicing Rocket the Raccoon and Groot respectively. The Kevin Feige production is a heartfelt emotional conclusion to Gunn’s MCU story, but we still can’t help but wonder about what lies ahead.

Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan have expressed their desire to return to the MCU again, but not the same can be said for Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, as they’ve both mentioned that they quite like how this addition to the series wraps up their arcs. However, we all know nothing is set in stone when the MCU is concerned. New developments could flip around the table anytime, but what we can hang on to right now is the bare hints laid throughout the movie’s post-credits scenes that leave us with some hints of the future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Ending

Peter announces his well-earned time off the squad. He travels back to Earth to reunite with his maternal granddad (whom he hasn’t seen since his mother’s death), as previously suggested by his half-sister, Mantis. While he bids the members of his found-family farewell, Rocket is appointed as the new capable captain of the Guardians.

Nebula and Drax stay on Knowhere to help build a new home for all the creatures rescued from High Evolutionary’s captivity. Gamora returns to join the Ravagers, while Mantis decides to discover herself and steps out of the band for a while to find her identity alongside her new not-so-baby companions.

But before they all part ways to chart out chapters of their own, Groot expands his diction by actually wording out the word “I love you guys”. Quill later hands down an iPod to Rocket, which stores several music playlists from different decades. In classic Guardians style, the end of a movie mark the beginning of a new journey, and so Rocket plays the music from the 2000s instead this time and not the ’90s. Florence + The Machine’s Dog Days Are Over offers the new and old Knowhere inhabitants solace and comfort, and they all break out into a well-deserved and missed dance party.

How Many Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Post Credits Scenes Are There?

There are 2 post credits scenes that you need to stick around for after the movie, one of them being a mid-credits scene.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Mid Credits Scene: Hints of a New Team?

Sitting in a desert, Rocket, Kraglin, Groot, Adam Warlock, Cosmo the Spacedog and Phyla (played by Kai Zen) discuss their favourite music acts as they await to face off against an adversary. While each of them shares their respective picks, Rocket hits us with a nostalgic full circle moment by playing his “favourite” song Come and Get Your Love, the same track that started this grand galactic musical adventure in the first place.

An army of vicious aliens approaches them, and they prepare to do their best to protect the locals living around that area. Phyla asks Rocket if he ever felt bad for these creatures, and he adds that they’ve no choice but to help the villagers as they can’t protect themselves against these creatures.

While the scene hints at the start of the new chapter for the Guardians, with a new set of heroes coming together while the old ones set out for their adventures, it’s also important to note that while Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock gets his brief moments to shine in the threequel, Phyla is still a mystery to most of us.

As far as the comics go, she was the daughter of the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, who’s otherwise been represented in the shape of Annette Benning’s Dr Lawson in MCU’s Captain Marvel. However, hints about Phyla being Phyla-Vell have yet to be laid down.

She’s merely introduced as one of High Evolutionary’s creations who sparks his interest with her heightened stamina by running around a giant hamster wheel of sorts earlier in the movie. The mid-credits scene makes the jump to a future where Phyla’s initial rescue leads her to become one of the new Guardians beside Rocket, but all of her powers are still in the dark for now.

Post Credits Scene

Keeping in tradition with the usual MCU post-credits scene, this one, too, doesn’t have anything solid to deliver that could otherwise add to the story or anything, but we get a glimpse at Kevin Bacon again in the papers, which instantly takes us back to the old days of the GOTG Holiday Special episode. The scene captures Peter and his grandfather (played by Gregg Henry) in an average ‘earthly’ conversation as the former complains about mowing the lawn while munching on his cereal breakfast.

Right after that, the conventional, yet visually different this time, MCU message says that “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return”. It makes one wonder how that could be possible now that the Guardians saga is concluded, but clearly, the story for these characters is far from over. With Peter now back on Earth, the possibilities are grand and plenty. We’ve already seen him join forces with the thunderous Thor; now, there will be more chances of him coming across Avengers down on the green planet.

We could get a sneak peek into his average life beside his granddad in a special presentation or another titular character’s movie or series, reeling in a new mighty collaboration. The ultimate showdown in the upcoming Avengers movies Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars is more than a feasible option for him and the Guardians to reunite again, especially since he already acknowledges that “the galaxy will always need its Guardians”.

GOTG 3 is now playing in theatres. The previous instalments of the franchise are streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
