Great Expectations Episode 3 Ending Explained: Who Is Estella Planning to Marry?

Great Expectations Episode 3 ending was quite an unexpected cliffhanger with the viewers debating on who is going to be Estella’s choice. Looking at how the last episodes have ended, we can say that this might just be the pattern the series tries to follow to keep us engaged. This episode too was directed by Brady Hood and written by Steven Knight with a runtime of 40-60 minutes.

The period drama is from Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight and is based on the classic by Charles Dickens of the same name. The production companies involved are Scott Free Productions, Hardy Baker & Son, BBC Studios and FXP. The main characters in the series include Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham, Fionn Whitehead as Pip and Shalom Brune-Franklin as Estella. Alongside them, we have Ashley Thomas as Jaggers, Johnny Harris as Magwitch, Hayley Squires as Sara, Owen McDonnell as Joe, Trystan Gravelle as Compeyson and Matt Berry as Mr. Pumblechook.

Great Expectations Episode 3 Ending Explained

Jaggers’ entry into the main storyline and Pip’s life at the start of Great Expectations Episode 3 did establish that this man would have a huge role to play in Pip’s life. It becomes clear by the end of the episode why one would think so.

Jaggers introduces Pip to Mr. Drummle towards the end of the episode. Turns out Mr. Drummle is the one Estella is set to marry. Later, Pip asks Jaggers why did he make the introduction. To which Jaggers reveals his plan that if Pip helped him destroy the life that Drummle is living then it would benefit both of them. The incentive for Pip is, of course, the fact that Estella might come back to him if Drummle did not stand his ground.

Later in the episode, we see Herbert pose a question to Pip about who he thinks Estella is going to marry. This thought is presented in front of our protagonist after it is revealed that Miss Havisham is coming to London with Estella, something the former hasn’t done in ages. Thus, the decision about Estella’s marriage has not been made yet.

However, for book readers, the ending isn’t as incomplete as it would look to others. But, we have to wait and see how Pip plans out his life in the way where the woman he loves lands up with him.
