Gram Chikitsalay Review

Prime Video has been on a roll recently with its grassroots shows, focusing on real situations, real people and real issues. The first season of Gram Chikitsalay is a warm, funny and relatable watch, more so because of the fantastic performances and a storyline that is simple but has a lot of nuance to it.

Gram Chikitsalay shows the lives of the people in a small town and how things change when a doctor from the city arrives to do some good for the community. Amol Parashar is the perfect candidate to be Dr. Prabhat Sinha, whose idealistic views don’t mesh well with the ecosystem of the place he is being transferred to. This isn’t a case where he will be able to change everything he touches; in fact, Prabhat has to change himself first and mix into the community to bring about real change.

There’s something very warm and endearing about Gram Chikitsalay as we see the different ways in which this brilliant and empathetic doctor learns the ways of the small world around him. From villagers who are set in their ways to understanding the politics of the village, there’s a lot of learning to do for Prabhat, and the series showcases that beautifully. It also helps that director Rahul Pandey captures the beauty and simplicity of Prabhat’s new life, which adds to the watchability of the series. There’s a freshness in the air that adds to this journey of self-discovery and change.

However, not all is well when it comes to Prabhat’s new life. The village he is posted at, as well as those around it, are plagued by difficulties that he wants to help tide them over, but he faces roadblocks around every turn. It’s something frustrating to see, and it makes your heart ache as well, and the series showcases these difficulties through an empathetic lens. Their struggles feel so real that you won’t be able to stop watching the series till it’s over. In spite of being a drama, the series keeps us on edge, wondering whether or not Prabhat will be able to fulfil his goal.

Amol Parashar has been a memorable watch and keeps delivering one great performance after another. In Gram Chikitsalay, he is a vulnerable and real Prabhat whom you root for as soon as the series starts. His issues don’t take away from his character; they add to making him whole. All the other actors, including Anandeshwar Dwivedi, Akash Makhija and Garima Vikrant Singh, are equally memorable. Singh has a juicy storyline that she nails through and through, and by the end of it, it almost moves you to tears.

Final Thoughts

Gram Chikitsalay is a warm and empathetic watch that is all heart. It’s one issue is that it ends a bit too early and feels a bit rushed because of it. Otherwise, this one’s hilarious.
