Govinda Naam Mera Review
Govinda, a struggling Bollywood dancer, has a troubled marriage with his wife, Gauri. The couple lives in his deceased father’s bungalow, which his half-brother wants to take over. Govinda has an affair with Suku, who is also a struggling dancer. Govinda can’t wait to divorce Gauri and marry Suku. However, his life is full of twists and turns, and a murder messes up everything for him.
In those two hours, we see all the drama that unfolds in Govinda’s and other people’s lives. We also find out who died, how it was planned, and who the actual villain is. Will Govinda succeed in changing his life or keep struggling till the end?
Govinda Naam Mera gives us a glimpse of Govinda and Gauri’s hilariously toxic marriage. The couple has no likeness or respect for each other. Gauri is dominating and knows how to make Govinda do anything she wants. Unsurprisingly, he has an affair with someone who understands him. Govinda and Suku have big personal and professional dreams. They’re just a divorce away from making them come true.
However, our protagonist Govinda’s life is a series of unfortunate events. Amusingly, we see him inviting more and more trouble. The result of everything he does turns out bad, and it becomes a moment of laughter for us. Sometimes, there’s madness going on screen, and at times, you want the story to bring in the first big twist.
After some buildup with a few random and silly sequences, the premise gets hilariously serious in the second hour. While the first big twist is foreseeable, what comes afterwards and how Govinda saves himself from the mess is something to look forward to. Despite being predictable to some extent, the whodunnit, howdunnit, and motive of the murder mystery make you stay.
With Govinda Naam Mera, director Shashank Khaitan has shown his affection for Hindi cinema, especially with the sudden close-up shots filled with dramatic moments. The amazing over-the-top dialogues, performances, comedy, and action pieces also remind us of the combined genres we’ve seen in many Hindi movies during the 90s and early 2000s.
Vicky Kaushal has proven his impeccable acting prowess with movies like Masaan, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Sanju, Raazi, and Sardar Udham. He has mostly been in intense dramas. But thanks to Shashank, we got to see the fun side of the talented actor. Vicky is truly a chameleon, and watching him as Govinda Waghmare will make you forget that he’s the same actor who made you cry in Masaan and Sardar Udham.
Vicky has a fantastic sense of humour and makes us root for Govinda. Another revelation from Shashank’s film is his dancing talent. We’ve already seen his moves in the music videos of Govinda Naam Mera songs. But there’s a sequence where someone sings, and Vicky has to dance and change the steps the moment the song changes. He leaves you in splits while making you marvel at his dancing skills.
Bhumi Pednekar plays the strong-headed, dumdar Gauri really well. Just like Vicky, she also becomes an instant favourite. However, I wish there were more scenes featuring her. Kiara Advani’s Suku is the girl next door. The actor does a good job throughout. The supporting cast, featuring Renuka Shahane, Dayanand Shetty, Amey Wagh, and others, also packs laughter bombs for us.
When it comes to music, Bijli is the best song in terms of choreography, execution, and composition. Kiara and Vicky have danced their hearts out, and the surprise at the end will make many viewers happy. So don’t scroll through the song. I wish there were also a dance number featuring Vicky and Bhumi.
Final Thoughts
The entire movie was chaotic and fun, just like Govinda’s life. You will laugh and be entertained, and you will be glued to the screen, especially in the last 30 minutes. After seven years, we finally saw Vicky doing comedy and showing off his dancing skills. It’s a big switch for the actor, who excels in dark and gripping dramas. Aap convince ho gaye, ya main aur likhu?
