Good Luck to You Leo Grande: Love & Self Discovery

Hulu’s Good Luck to You Leo Grande is a powerful film that starts off with the bone of feminism but, wraps itself around love and a journey of self-discovery. From sexual awakening to finding a human connection, the film touches all the right spots with beauty and brilliance.

Nancy Stokes is a retired teacher with a dead husband. She has had sex with one man in her entire life and, that too has never been good enough to send her raving about it. With everything behind her now, Nancy is on the track to finding sexual pleasure, or at least having an orgasm for heaven’s sake! With time being the charm, she finds Leo Grande- a charismatic and compassionate sex worker, who not only moves her desires but heart too.

In a four-walled hotel room with dusty grey furniture as a company, Nancy and Leo help each other find themselves in a world they did not know they were lost to. A love-friendship story that you’d want more of, Good Luck to You Leo Grande is a sex-positive, humane tale of two people unknowingly holding on to each other.

When it’s Emma Thompson, it always feels just right. But in Good Luck to You Leo Grande, feels like Thompson has given her performance of a lifetime as an old woman on her post-marital journey that burns with chemistry and self-exploratory thoughts. Thompson is likeable right from the start when she reads out her grocery list of sexual activities she would like to engage in, making her naive and childlike but, also clear and curious.

But, Thompson’s Nancy works just that fine for us only because it is Daryl McCormack’s Leo Grande who supports her so thoughtfully through the entire movie. The Peaky Blinders actor is a character just out of a novel that swoons you with his words and opinions. From his stance on sex workers to his thoughts on love and romance, McCormack does it all perfectly.

Putting two and two together in Good Luck to You Leo Grande, the chemistry our main characters share is palpable. On the surface level, it might not look like everyone’s cup of tea seeing a 20-something-year-old hook up with a retirement-aged woman but, in the film, the age never questions the audiences or makes them uncomfortable.

The script is so smoothly written that the thoughts of the audience align with what the characters are about to say/discuss, resolving the issue of having a biased perception. Moreover, Thompson and McCormack are terrific actors with great chemistry to make it all work.

The strongest point, however, of Good Luck to You Leo Grande has to be the script that explores sex, intimacy, love, romance, power and society. The various themes and topics that the makers bring up sync in well with each other, without overlapping in a pretentious, preachy sense and rather feeling an organic way to impart and talk about the important things in the world that are often overlooked.

Good Luck to You Leo Grande: Final Verdict

Good Luck to You Leo Grande is an important film as it is moving. It is a crime that the film is so short and not a full-fledged series with five confirmed seasons because it absorbs you completely in a trance and inside the hotel room walls where Nancy and Leo are staying. It is a modern-day Pretty Woman with the roles reversed yet better.

You can watch Good Luck to You Leo Grande now on Hulu.
