Flashback Review

What would you do if you knew your life was in danger and you were somehow sent to the past to correct it, ensuring a smoother present? Would you try to make things right? Of course, we would, right? Exactly the same thing happens in the short film where we see Jass, who had a premonition that something was about to happen. One day, when she was attacked, she was sent back in time to make sure she corrected things so that her future would be secure.

The film plays with the mind perfectly as it will force you to put yourself in her place and imagine that you wouldn’t have thought of it happening, even though we’ve always heard of the phase that when someone dies, their life flashes before their eyes. But seeing this actually happening will shake you a bit.

Flashback Review Still 1

The audio and visual elements are skillfully executed, weaving a seamless cinematic experience that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. This careful craftsmanship elevates the film beyond typical horror fare, as sometimes you don’t need ghosts to make you scared, but psychological thrillers are enough.

One thing that did make me question was why this is a short film. There were many aspects that could have been covered if it were a full-length film. For instance, if Dr. Bones was a vulture skull creature, why did she keep the doll with her? What was the actual reason for her boyfriend’s death?

Flashback Review Still 2

Despite these lingering questions, the short film’s brevity serves as its strength, leaving just enough unsaid to let viewers ponder and speculate. The enigmatic nature of Dr Bones and the symbolic presence of the doll adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, sparking curiosity and allowing for individual interpretation. Similarly, the ambiguity surrounding Jass’s boyfriend’s demise leaves room for imagination, leaving viewers haunted by their own theories.

Flashback Short Film: Final Thoughts

Flashback captivates with its unique blend of psychological terror and time-bending suspense. Jemma Moore’s compelling performance as Jass anchors the film, taking the audience on a heart-pounding journey through past and present. While the movie’s brevity leaves some questions unanswered, it ultimately stands as a testament to Jed Shepherd’s ability to deliver a gripping and thought-provoking horror experience.
