FIFA Uncovered Trailer has been released by Netflix, at a rather unique time, right before the opening World Cup game between Qatar and Ecuador next month. Set to premiere next month, this investigative documentary series will uncover the scandals and behind-the-scenes of the organisation’s legacy and power struggles.
The official synopsis of the series reads, “From power struggles to global politics, an exploration of FIFA reveals the organization’s checkered history — and what it takes to host a World Cup.” Over the decades, control of FIFA has seen many internal, and external power struggles between some of the sport’s most influential figures.
From Joao Havelange and Lennart Johansson to Sepp Blatter and Michael Platini, some of the most powerful men in football have been at the epicentre of corruption allegations. These allegations led to various football associations around the globe, and most importantly the fans, questioning the decisions behind awarding world cups to specific nations.

Recent controversies are the 2018 Russian World Cup and the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which are slated to begin later next month. The decision was criticized by fans and Sepp Blatter as well, as Qatar didn’t have the infrastructure to accommodate a football tournament of this size. Also, the high temperatures made them postpone the game in the Autumn/Winter season for the first time.
In the trailer, being a member of FIFA is described as being in a secret garden and there is also a so-called ‘unspoken code’ that you can do whatever you want. They wanted to be a force for good but the lines between right and wrong, blurred. Wire fraud, money laundering, racketeering and tax evasion and other things became associated with the Sports organisation instead.
For decades, FIFA united the globe through football. But behind the game, craftier schemes were at play. This documentary series traces the organisation’s legacy, exploring the pageantry, power struggles and politics of hosting the World Cup. It’s the biggest sports corruption scandal they have ever had, as stated by one of the documentary interviewees and makes us question if these people really care about the game.
