The latest episode of Fallout slows itself down and gives us a deeper understanding of its characters and its world, using restraint to keep us invested throughout the runtime. It’s a more reflective turn of events, choosing to steer somewhat away from a purely survival thriller to something more introspective and deep. The themes and situations that the episode sets up promise to give us something more in the upcoming episodes.

The standout element of the episode is Maximus. As mentioned previously, we focus on his backstory, and the flashbacks provide emotional weight to a story that has been, by far, more action-packed. These moments are quietly impactful and describe perfectly how Maximus came to join the Brotherhood of Steel. Aaron Moten is memorable in the role and gives us something to hold on to beyond survival; there are emotions in the midst that will leave anyone hooked.

Meanwhile, Lucy and The Ghoul continue on their journey, building tension through moral contrast and conversation. Both these characters have gone through their fair share of ups and downs, and these ideals are now challenged at every turn. While Lucy’s resolve shakes, the Ghoul’s humour seems to bring forth something deeper.
