Episode 3 starts with a glimpse of a new case that’s coming our protagonist’s way. Jung Myung-seok introduces the case of a younger brother beating his elder brother to death, and he is the autistic defendant Kim Jeong-hun. While Jung Myung-seok thinks that it would easier to handle the case with Woo Young-woo, she tries to explain that it is not the same and that there are different kinds of autism. The two then head to the parents of the defendant to discuss the case and Jung Myung-seok seems confident with Woo Young-woo on the case as she is on the autism spectrum.

Kim Heong-hun is brought to meet the two but things don’t go as Jung Myung-seok had hoped for and the talks soon come to an end. Later, Woo Young-woo asks her father how to communicate with an autistic person and how does one feel living with them. Her father then remembers the lonely feeling he felt living with her in a memory from her childhood. He tells her that to communicate with her client it is better to find something that they like as that was the way he would communicate with Woo Young-woo in her childhood.

The next day, the attorneys try to communicate with Kim Jeong-hun through his favourite character Pengsoo. While they somehow try to get some information from him, connecting his brother’s death to suicide, things don’t go easy as his mother proves them wrong and tells them that it is not easy to understand Kim Jeong-hun. She tells them that this is the last time they meet, but Woo Young-woo isn’t ready to give up and goes to find evidence of the suicide.

She goes to the defendant’s house with Lee Jun-ho to investigate the room where the incident happened. The two find a rope that may have been used by the elder brother to hang himself, as well as his diary. The diary is presented to the parents and it is proved that their son had tried to commit suicide numerous times before while the defendant has tried to save him. The parents are not convinced by this and are angry at Jung Myung-seok and Woo Young-woo, storming off after breaking their ties with Hanbada.

Woo Young-woo is disheartened by the parent’s attitude toward their younger son as she goes through social platforms where this news is shared. As she goes through the negative comments toward autistic people, she is saddened. The next day at the law firm, she notices Kim Heong-hun outside the building and brings him into the building while calling his mother. The mother then requests Woo Young-woo to take back the case on the condition that they do not bring out the suicide. While walking the two outside, she recalls the fact that in the past individuals with autism were thought of as people who were not worthy of living and the same seems to hold true even today.

In the courtroom, while Woo Young-woo tries to reduce the sentence for the defendant on the grounds of his autism, the prosecutor attacks her due to her autism spectrum disorder. Back in Hanbada, Woo Young-woo tries to recreate the suicide attempt but is mistaken by Lee Jun-ho who pulls her back. This clicks something in her head and she rushes to Jung Myung-seok’s office and finds him with the defendant’s father. She explains to the two what must have happened at the scene and is able to prove that the defendant cannot be charged guilty for the death.

Woo Young-woo is disheartened but she agrees with the father for she knows that while she may be able to differentiate between her autism and that of the defendant but the judge and prosecutor will not be able to do the same. Jung Myung-seok is not convinced by this and goes to CEO Han Seon-young to get Woo Young-woo back on the case. She advises him to pass on the case to another lawyer as a way to show that the two are a team. He agrees with her suggestion.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo Episode 3 Review

Episode 3 was an emotional episode that really touched my heart. Today I was filled with such sad emotions along with the feeling of injustice that exists in society even today. Woo Young-woo’s words reminded us that specially-abled people were once deemed unworthy of life and this mentally exists even today, it may not be in the open but it is hidden somewhere. There are some who think that people on the autism spectrum are all the same and are capable of understanding each other, and some that see specially-abled individuals as unable to live a normal life. There are others who just find them incapable of having a professional life where they are as capable as any other individual.

This episode showed us sides of people who end up behaving in an abnormal way because their mind is stuck to somewhere around 80 years back. I really hope that our protagonist shows these people the reality and doesn’t give up on the job that she loves so much!
