Everything to Know About The Runner: Gal Gadot’s New Thriller Releasing on Prime Video

Everything to Know About The Runner: What if your morning run suddenly becomes a race against time and stopping meant your child would die?

This is the terrifyingly simple idea sitting at the heart of Gal Gadot’s upcoming psychological thriller, Prime Video’s The Runner, which is set to arrive on September 2, 2026. Kevin Macdonald wears the director’s cap, and the film takes the familiar “parent racing to save a kidnapped child” setup while giving a very literal twist that the mother cannot stop. The title is not really subtle.

Everything to Know About The Runner: What Is It About?

The Runner follows Maia Marten, played by Gal Gadot, a sharp and successful defence attorney living in London. Her day begins normally; Maia goes out for her morning run when she gets a phone call that turns everything upside down as she finds that her son is kidnapped.

The instructions she gets are straightforward: she has to keep moving, obey the commands and tell no one what is happening, and if she stops, her son dies.

So the frantic journey through London begins, where Maia has to run through the city while simultaneously trying to understand who is controlling her and why. It is essentially a ticking-clock thriller, except that the clock has legs.

Gal Gadot Plays Maia Marten

Gal Gadot takes the lead as Maia Marten, bringing another physically demanding role to her filmography but with an interesting difference: she is not a superhero or a spy. She is a lawyer and a mother who suddenly finds herself in an impossible situation. There is a groundedness in the character itself.

The actor is not given a larger-than-life world, but The Runner puts her directly into the streets of London and asks her to survive with a lot of running.

Who Else Is There in The Runner?

Alongside Gadot, the film stars Damian Lewis, Rory Wilmot, Alfred Enoch and Phoenix Di Sebastiani.

Lewis plays the mysterious figure behind the phone calls that keep Maia running. The cast is seemingly led by Gal Gadot; the entire story depends on Maia’s journey.

Kevin Macdonald, whose work includes The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void and The Mauritanian, is the director of the film, while Mark Gibson wrote the screenplay and David Kosse producer. Amazon MGM is behind the film.

Gal Gadot Trained for Nine Months

Here is perhaps the most fascinating part of behind-the-scenes detail: Gadot was not actually a runner before making it. She trained for around nine months with a coach to prepare her for the role. The goal was not simply to make her liik like she could run, but she had to learn the technique well enough for it to become natural during filming.

The training became an important part because the film required her to run for extended periods across London’s streets and different locations.

Gadot even broke her feet during production and finished filming on crutches. The production had to adapt around her injury and return to certain scenes later.

What Can We Expect From The Runner?

The trailer makes it clear that it is not going to be some beautiful, peaceful morning run. Maia is seen racing through London, moving through different neighbourhoods and getting caught up in dangerous situations as she follows the caller’s instructions.

The trailer also teases fights, frantic escapes and genuinely wild stunts, including Maia jumping from a bridge, but the most interesting part would perhaps be the psychological pressure. Maia is not simply trying to outrun someone but is controlled: by a caller; fear.

When Does The Runner Release?

The Runner is set for a global premiere on Prime Video on September 2, 2026 (Wednesday). The movie currently carries a PG-13 rating.

The film is also one of Prime Video’s major releases for the first week of September.

Why The Runner Is Worth Keeping an Eye On?

The Runner sounds absurdly simple: a woman runs; her son is kidnapped; someone gives her instructions; she cannot stop, but perhaps the simplicity itself makes the thriller work.

There is no complicated mythology to learn and no universe to keep track of; the stakes are personal. The protagonist has an objective, and the film gives her almost no time to breathe while she tries to achieve the goal.

We have seen Gal Gadot do action, and we know that she can handle physical roles, but The Runner appears to rob the superhero gloss and put her in a recognisable and relatable setting: being a parent who has suddenly lost control over what happens to their child.

The premise is frightening and deeply human; running is just a mechanism that pushes Maia’s love, fear, and desperation further in the same direction.
