Cathy Ames is not exactly the sort of character you can define neatly with flowery words in a paragraph. She is one of those literary women who have remained subjects of fascination because of the questions surrounding her, like why she does what she does.
The Netflix series appears interested in the space between the questions. Kazan reportedly wanted Cathy to be a person, not just an archetype, which meant expanding rather than reinventing her; finding roots present in Steinbeck’s novel and allowing them to grow into a fuller character, which makes the role particularly full of juice for Pugh because she has spent a good part of her career being good at characters who refuse to sit in one emotional box comfortably.
The Bigger Theme: What Do We Inherit?
For all its family drama, East of Eden is not really just about who is with whom, who betrayed whom or who did what to whom. Its most interesting question is inheritance: emotional inheritance.
The behaviours, secrets, damages, expectations: things nobody explicitly teaches you but somehow are engraved within you really deep. Kazan’s adaptation seems interested in what happens when people become aware of those inherited shadows and try to decide whether they will continue carrying them.
It makes a story published decades ago feel surprisingly contemporary because families remain families and people still inherit; we are still spending a large amount of time trying to figure out which parts of ourselves really belong to us.
When And Where To Watch East of Eden
East of Eden premieres on Netflix on October 1, 2026, as a series consisting of seven episodes, with Zoe Kazan in a dual role as writer and executive producer.
At the centre of all the chaos is Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames: a woman Steinbeck made difficult to understand, and a character Kazan is determined to make feel fully human.
The most important question of all is “what happens when a story about inheritance itself is an inheritance?” Steinbeck wrote East of Eden as the story of his country and himself. Elia Kazan then took it to the screen in 1955, and decades later, in 2026, Zoe Kazan has packed the same material and made it her own for OTT release.
Florence Pugh gets to step into the centre of the story. If the story really is about what we carry from one generation to another, then perhaps East of Eden is doing what the novel has always done: taking something old, holding it up to a new generation and asking us what we see in it.
