True crime documentaries have an element of suspense and shock inhibited in them. The way the story unfolds and leaves you grasping for more is surely one of the best things about the genre. The new Netflix docufilm Into the Deep is a prime example of it, where Emma Sullivan explores the murder of Journalist Kim Wall by Peter Madsen.

1. Untouchable: The Inside Story of the Harvey Weinstein Scandal (2019)

Based on the real-life scandal, the documentary explores the fall of the Hollywood Producer Harvey Weinstein after a series of Me Too Accusations. It depicts the stories of victims and their fight for justice, against the powerful mogul.

This true crime documentary is based on the abduction of Jan Broberg Felt by a family friend and neighbor Robert Berchtold in the 70s. It features interviews with Broberg, who describes the detail of her incredible life story.

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork explores the details of the real-life murder of French TV Producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier. The true crime docu-film series is almost like an investigation into the case, where Sophie was murdered outside her vacation home in Ireland, in 1996. The three-part series offers some deep insight and relevant information, that will leave you split.

The film was made by John Dawer, and released on 30th June 2021.

4. Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story(2022)

The documentary is centered around Steven Stayner, who went missing and appeared after seven years, after escaping from his captor. Along with the rescue of Timothy White, a five-year-old. The series follows the story of his escape, reunion, and the aftermath of brutal events that followed.

Jessica Dimmock directed the mini-series while it was produced by filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo.

5. The Hunting Ground(2015)

The Hunting Ground is a 2015 documentary that explores the horrifying covers ups of sexual assaults on many American college campuses. The docu-film deals with a sensitive subject and follows the true story of the survivors.

It was directed by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering. You can watch the documentary on Apple TV+.
