Doctor Cha Episode 5 Recap
In the last episode, we saw Jeong-suk get electrocuted while resuscitating a patient. Now that we get to see what happens next, it becomes clear that Seo In-ho has some unresolved feelings for her. He runs after her into the room where the older resident is looking over their oldest resident. In-ho takes her to another bed where she is being treated. Everyone feels this is embarrassing because how does one make such an amateur mistake?
Jung-min also feels the same way but is more worried about her health. She tells him that she was distracted. At this point, the senior resident comes in and reminds her that she still has a job and must get up. Roy Kim also gets wind of all this and asks his colleagues why they laugh at Jeong-suk’s condition. He checks up on her, and since she seems okay, he doesn’t make too much of a big deal about it.
However, Jeong-suk doesn’t only have to handle the hospital work but also her home life. Her daughter has been struggling to arrange materials for her art school admissions. Unable to find any consultant to help, she turns to her mother. But after Jeong-suk’s exciting day and a tiring work week, speaking to her daughter is an addition she cannot handle. Falling asleep mid-conversation, her daughter kicks her out of the room.

In-ho listens to this conversation from outside the room and is glad about this development. When Jeong-suk is on her bed sulking, her husband comes in to console her. He tells her she can delay her residency for a year and focus on the kids, especially I-rang, who needs her the most right now. This conversation becomes even better because he gives her the birthday ‘bracelet’ he bought. She becomes really happy because it is the first gift he has given her, and she is extremely happy about it.
Jeong-suk and Seung-hi keep crossing paths at the hospital, and the latter finds out about the bracelet. She appropriately loses it and asks In-ho to explain himself. He says he only had to do it because she found the original receipt and will ensure it doesn’t happen again. Seung-hi goes home to listen to her daughter’s rant about not having a father, her mother being a mistress and losing a sense of her identity. This gives Seung-hi a mental crisis.
The next day, she debilitates Jeong-suk with work. They’re not even in the same department anymore. This shouldn’t be her job. But she obviously cannot say no to her boss. Keeping a smiling face, she takes all the work in stride, even if it stops her from doing her day job. After she does all the research work, she takes some time to herself and finds out that not taking immunosuppressants on time has taken a toll on her. Dr Roy confronts her to tell her she needs to care for herself.

But clearly, patients don’t make that easy for her. Chairman Oh was initially against the surgery completely, but almost dying gave him the zeal to live, so all the doctors came together to discuss the progression of the treatment, and they concluded that they might be able to save some of the organs. Jeong-suk gets so happy that he won’t have to wear a permanent stoma that she gets him new underwear with her paycheck. She also gets things online for her other family members, personalising each of them with a message or a symbol of her love.
Only the other patient from prison is left, and she is vehemently refusing treatment. Clearly stating that she wants to die, it becomes difficult for Jeong-suk to make any progress with the treatment. Finally, when she gets the patient to do an X-ray, Dr Seung-hi stops her and asks her to do some important work. Before she could do any of that, the patient was nowhere to be found. The hospital staff is on high alert, and everyone is scared of what this could mean for the hospital.
The chief is harrowed by this kind of incompetence by an older resident and even asks her to quit the department to save the hospital from any further issues. Jeong-suk takes this to heart and even tells her husband about this plan, which he seems really happy about. But Roy Kim is the one who gives her the most surprising advice. He is okay with her quitting because her attitude of giving up after a failure makes him believe that this is not for her.

For Jeong-suk, though, things really have a way of turning around because Chairman Oh donated 10 billion won to the hospital on the condition that their oldest resident won’t be quitting her job or be fired. Since the hospital needs this donation to survive, Jeong-suk seems not to be leaving anytime soon, as she makes it clear by saying, ‘Are you crazy?’ when Roy Kim suggests leaving.
Doctor Cha Episode 5 Review
This was a filler episode, mostly for the character rather than the audience. We were convinced for entirely feminist reasons that she should become a full-fledged doctor, but the worthiness argument is truly taking over the narrative. The humour is still there, and the seeds in this episode seem to be there so that future episodes can have some serious pay-off.
Roy Kim and Jeong-suk remain the favourite pair, but if Seo In-ho has some issues and this whole thing becomes a love triangle, things would become too complicated to retain its charm. However, for now, audiences can enjoy the fact that the resident is making mistakes and learning realistically.
