Day Shift is a Netflix vampire horror comedy movie starring Jamie Foxx as Bud Jablonski, Dave Franco as Seth, Snoop Dogg as Big John Elliot, Karla Souza as Audrey San Fernando, Meagan Good as Jocelyn Jablonski, Zion Broadnax as Paige, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Heather. The story is by Tyler Tice, who has co-written the screenplay with Shay Hatten. The 114 minutes movie is directed by JJ Perry.

The synopsis reads, “An LA vampire hunter has a week to come up with the cash to pay for his kid’s tuition and braces. Trying to make a living these days just might kill him.”

Day Shift Review Contains No Spoilers

In Netflix movie Day Shift, we meet Bud Jablonski (Jamie), who works as a vampire hunter in LA. Bud does a night shift and kills the vampires that cause any harm. However, he needs a huge amount of money for his daughter’s school fees and braces. Bud is asked to do the day shift with Seth (Dave) to manage the amount if he wants to earn money.

One might assume that working during the day might keep Bud safe. But killing vampires comes with a cost, and he has to pay a huge price for killing someone important to a ruthless vamp named Audrey. Will Bud manage to collect enough money for his daughter’s needs? Will the day shift prove fatal to him with the vampires on the hunt to kill him? We get our answers in the end.

In the opening scene of the Netflix film Day Shift, Jamie Foxx channels his inner ghostbuster. With a blazing gun and fight scenes, he shows Bud’s violent and messy style of dealing with the vampires. The first kill in the movie causes trouble for Bud till the end. It’s a simple plot, and writers Tyler Tice and Shay Hatten made sure not to overcomplicate it even once.

As it’s a horror comedy, director JJ Perry has tried to balance the humour and horror in his movie. Sometimes, he brings together both the crucial elements of the story. While the movie is genuinely funny in several sequences, the jokes sometimes don’t land. The most entertaining scenes are between Bud and his vampire hunting partner, Seth.

The movie is 114 minutes long because of lengthy action sequences. When Bud started working in his new shift, the makers wanted us to see his style, fearless side, attitude and recklessness. These are also the scenes that strengthen Bud and Seth’s bonds. The strengthening of the bond plays a key role in the end when a certain twist occurs.

Coming to the horror aspect, the vampires aren’t scary. They don’t evoke any fear. But at least they’re not boring, whiny, complicated or unnecessarily trying to get dark or deep. The vampires need blood and seek revenge, and that’s what their focus is. Well, it’s good to see a different side of the vampire community, haha!

Day Shift Still 2

For Jamie Foxx, a character like Bud Jablonski is easy to play. Foxx has good comic timing and plays his part well. Dave Franco is hilarious and has amazing scenes with Jamie. Snoop Dogg brings his swag in between. Karla Souza is the vamp in the story and does a good job.

Day Shift Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Day Shift is a wacky vampire horror comedy for Jamie fans to see him shooting down the vamps. The humour is okay, and the horror isn’t up to the mark.

The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
