With the release of the survival horror film Dangerous Animals this week, fans have flooded social media with their different feelings that will leave most viewers amused. From writer Nick Lepard and director Sean Byrne, the film is a jaw-dropping watch from start to end. Following a stealthy serial killer with a unique flair for a macabre killing technique, the film blends horror and thriller in the wildest combination ever.
The movie premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight on May 17, 2025, marking the first Australian feature to debut in the sidebar since 2014. It opened in U.S. theatres on June 6 via IFC Films and Shudder.

One user wrote, “#DangerousAnimals is so fucking good… Sean Byrne’s new film moves like it was shot out of a cannon… Jai Courtney has never been better, channeling the best of Nic Cage wackiness… best thing I’ve seen in a while…”
Most audiences have similarly had very positive responses to the film. The unexpected premise could’ve been the most egregious thing one could’ve seen, but the film does a fantastic job of staying away from everything that makes films of this genre terrible and bring something fresh and wacky to audiences. One viewer writes, “What I love of #DangerousAnimals is how bold and risky it is and it works because of the main performances and the setting. It has all the red flags for this movie to fail and it surprises in a way that is unexpected.”
However, the best part of the film was the performances, especially from Jai Courtney, who plays Tucker. The film showcases Tucker as a derranged psychopath and Courtney nails every minute of the film. Plus, the unique blend of serial killer and shark thriller gives the genre a fresh perspective, and the tight and unforgiving location is just the icing on the cake. One user writes, “#DangerousAnimals is an insane fun movie. Jai Courtney really gives it his all and carries this movie from start to finish. A shark movie that will become a CULT HIT in a few years. WoW!”
The film also stars Hassie Harrison, Josh Heuston, Rob Carlton, Ella Newton and Liam Greinke, along with Courtney, and everyone delivers a great performance, making this a thoroughly enjoyable and kooky watch. It’s wild, it’s unhinged, and it’s a whole lotta fun, according to viewers on X. Plus, gore lovers will have a field day with this one as there’s a ton of great effects to keep viewers on edge and completely immersed.
