In the heart of a secluded town, Elodie, the daughter of a nobleman, grapples with the plight of her people, battling hunger and cold. Despite scarce resources, she tirelessly strives to alleviate their suffering. When a messenger from the royal family arrives with a proposal for her to marry the prince, Elodie sees it as a beacon of hope. Accepting means not only securing her future as queen but also ensuring her people’s survival. As Elodie steps into the grandeur of Aurea, doubts assail her, yet the prince’s charm eases her apprehensions.

However, beneath the veneer of royalty lies a dark secret. Following her wedding, she is led into the depths of the mountains to witness the royal family’s clandestine rituals. Initially unnerved but compliant, Elodie’s world unravels when she stumbles upon a dragon lurking within the caverns, poised to devour her. Caught in a web of deception and peril, Elodie must navigate treacherous waters to save herself and uncover the truth behind the facade of royalty. Upon arriving in Aurea, Elodie was married to the prince. After the wedding, she was taken to the hill to perform the ritual in which both the husband and wife’s hands were cut, and their blood was mixed, thereby including her in the royal bloodline. As the ritual was completed, Elodie was thrown into the dragon’s cave by her husband, when she realized they had sacrificed her, remembering the story told to her about a dragon attacking the kingdom.

The tale recounted that the king and his knights bravely fought the dragon but couldn’t defeat it. Instead, the king made a deal with the dragon, agreeing to give up his daughters to keep the people safe. But she realized that the kingdom had lied to her. In reality, the king and his knights unjustly provoked the dragon, resulting in a tragic chain of events. They ruthlessly slaughtered the dragon’s offspring, triggering the dragon’s understandable retaliation against the king and his entourage.

Seeking restitution for her losses, the dragon simply requested the king’s daughters in exchange. However, instead of offering his own royal offspring, the dishonourable king callously sacrificed innocent young women, sending them to their demise.

Consequently, the royal family sought out Elodie as a bride for their prince. Tragically, she discovered that she wasn’t alone in her plight; two other girls found themselves ensnared in the same dire situation. Heartbreakingly, one of them met a tragic end before Elodie’s wedding day. Through these harrowing events, Elodie came to realize the insidious deception woven by the royal family. They concocted a fabricated narrative to shield themselves from accountability, while innocent lives bore the brunt of their actions.

Recognising the cycle of violence perpetuated by the royal family’s deceit, Elodie understood that her escape from the dragon would not end the suffering. Unless the underlying injustice was addressed, more girls would inevitably suffer a similar fate, perpetuating the cycle of violence indefinitely. In a decisive move to bring closure to the situation, Elodie resolved to disclose the truth to the dragon once and for all. Despite initial resistance from the dragon, who launched an aggressive assault, Elodie remained composed and resourceful. Through her quick thinking, she managed to pacify the dragon sufficiently to convey the truth, ensuring that it understood and responded appropriately.

What Happened to the Dragon?

Elodie employs cunning to outwit the Dragon and endeavours to flee with her sister, but her stratagem is soon unravelled. A skirmish erupts, wherein the Dragon relentlessly attacks, disregarding Elodie’s attempts to divulge the truth about the royal lineage. In a pivotal moment, she positions herself before a reflective surface. As the Dragon unleashes its fiery assault, she deftly evades, causing the flames to rebound upon the beast. Though conventional weaponry proved futile against the Dragon, its own flames proved fatal.

Searing from the self-inflicted blaze and confronted with the truth of its inadvertent atrocities against innocent women, the Dragon implores Elodie to end its existence and the cycle of violence. Yet, Elodie recognizes the Dragon as another casualty of the royal family’s machinations. Instead of delivering the coup de grace, she employs the luminescent aid of glowworms to mend its wounds, sparing it from demise. Despite its prior aggression, Elodie extends empathy toward the Dragon, cognizant of its solitary plight as the last of its kind, bereft of offspring slaughtered by the king centuries prior.

Elodie endeavours to alter the Dragon’s fate, opting to allow justice to be meted out to the malevolent forces that have tormented generations of women. In exacting retribution for its slain progeny, the Dragon fulfils its vendetta, yet finds itself adrift without purpose. However, buoyed by Elodie’s compassion and integrity, it begins to contemplate a new chapter, diverging from its vengeful past.

In a poignant denouement, as Elodie and her kin commence their homeward voyage, the Dragon accompanies them. This symbolic gesture signifies the Dragon’s departure from Aurea, leaving behind its legacy of loss and enmity, and embracing a new role in Elodie’s realm. There, it pledges to safeguard the vulnerable and aid Elodie in fostering harmony and abundance among her subjects.
