Class of 09 Episode 8 Ending Explained: Is the Class Able to Shut Down the AI?

Class of 09 Episode 8 Ending Explained: The final episode of Hulu’s sci-fi crime thriller has dropped. The show has quickly come to an end and, no one was clearly ready for it. The miniseries is created by Tom Rob Smith. This FX on Hulu show is produced by FX Productions and Color Force by executive producers Tom Rob Smith, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Nellie Reed.

The final episode of Class of 09 was titled ‘Graduation’ with a runtime of approximately 40 to 50 minutes. Joe Robert Cole served as the director for the episode which was written by Tom Rob Smith.

Class of 09 stars Brian Tyree Henry as Tayo Miller, Kate Mara as Ashley Poet, Raúl Castillo as Amos, Jake McDorman as Murphy, Sepideh Moafi as Hour, Brian J Smith as Lennix, Jon Jon Briones as Gabriel, Brooke Smith as Drew, Rosalind Eleazar as Vivienne, Briar Boggs as Henry Lee and Mark Pellegrino as Mark Tupirik.

Class of 09 Episode 8 Ending Explained

As we have clearly seen throughout the episodes of Class of 09, the system just keeps getting out of hand. In the finale, it ends up targeting none other than Vivienne! We are in 2034, and the arrest against Vivienne is sanctioned based on ‘thought crime’- she is writing a book that is anti-AI making her a threat to the system. She goes through a courtroom trial with Poet, Hour, Lennix and Tayo in the room but, the verdict that she is guilty does not change, even after a very compelling speech.

This incident might have been a critical factor in Tayo joining hands with Hour, Poet and Lennix because the next thing we know is the four planning to take down the system. Poet has the card (given by Amos) to reprogram the system, removing the privileged exceptions to the system. This would result in the high-power people also being scanned and evaluated by the AI, which they would not like making them want to shut down the system.

The class goes to the original data centre and executes the plan with Hour’s help in the technical part. However, the four are arrested immediately after. But, what was to be done was done and, the higher officials, such as Warren ended up shutting down the system rather than taking accountability for their actions. Due to this the predictive arrests and cases are nullified, which means Viv and her gang are free to go.

At the end of Class of 09, we see Poet teaching the class of 2034- how justice is about probability and humans need to take the decision, not machines. It is quite a nostalgic scene with the same dialogue Poet had heard, and now she is saying it out loud. As for Tayo, there is an important interview he gives out about equality and humanity.

  1. Great ending. Ultimatly ethical and concerned with equality of outcome. All entertainment should strive to be more concerned with Justice and wakeup to the inherant and systemic racism built into the American
Society. Honest and enlightend discussions of racial bias were refreshing.
