Citadel Episode 6 Review: What Was the Point of Everything?

The new episode titled ‘Secrets In Night Need Early Rains’ is now out. The spy thriller series stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Nadia Sinh, Richard Madden as Mason Kane/Kyle, Stanley Tucci as Bernard Orlick, Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer, Osy Ikhile as Carter Spence, Roland MØller as Anders Silje and Davik Silje, Ashleigh Cummings as Abby Conroy, and Moira Kelly as Joe.

Citadel Episode 6 Review and Recap

The episode takes us 30 years back in Serbia at a medical camp. The camera focuses on a kid who looks like a young Mason. The story immediately shifts to Oregon (6 months after the Serbia scene), where a lady takes care of the same kid. We learn that Mason’s father died when he was 5, and his mom left him alone. Hence, he’s always been lost, and Citadel and Nadia felt like home to him. 

In Morocco, Dahlia currently captures Nadia and Mason. She tells Kyle/Mason to carry out a mission in the submarine as it has something she seeks. In the previous episode, she tells Mason she has abducted his daughter. If Mason doesn’t do what she wants, she will kill his daughter. 

Kyle carries out the mission, but it’s not surprising that there will be an ambush. The series gets predictable often. We also get to meet Mason and Nadia’s secret daughter. There’s also a reunion of Kyle’s family. Spence figures out how to bring Mason’s memories back as he succeeds in getting a backup.

Also, who is the agent who betrayed Citadel? Well, it is NOT even a hard guess! After giving away that Nadia and Mason have a daughter in the previous episode, it wasn’t tough to think that Mason is the cause of everything. How did he do it? Well, wait for the most common twist used in cinema!

The story keeps shifting back and forth from various timelines. What I never enjoyed about the series is the multiple time jumps it takes within minutes, leaving us no chance to grasp the story. Because of these different time jumps, we feel disconnected from the plot and the characters. 

After extremely disappointing episode 3, episode 4 and episode 5, I had no hope from episode 6. If the makers failed to tell any substantial spy story in these episodes, isn’t it too much pressure to pack something solid in just one episode? Even though the narrative in the final episode shifts from land to air to water, it doesn’t excite you.

Also, the other “major” twist in the last 15 minutes is lukewarm. The revelation about Mason’s past leaves you wondering – Was Citadel even serious about their work? How did they not even care to do background checks on the agents they hired? If they were such a big deal once upon a time and would know every move of the terrorists and criminal organisations, what stopped them from being vigilant about their recruits?

Final Thoughts

Overall, except for unveiling Mason’s past, the series has not provided us with anything concrete to call it a spy thriller. After watching all the episodes, one can hardly know anything about the spy agency and its troubles. It’s really disappointing that one cannot summarise the story and the significance of these characters. What was the point of everything?
