Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 9-10 Review: End of a Saga

Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 9 and 10 concludes the Burgue chapter in the story of Human Vs Fae and provides a fitting end to the trajectory of Rycroft and Vignette.  Moreover, the finale episodes have an average run time of 55+ minutes and are based on the novel by Travis Beacham.

For the unversed, the series revolves around the theme of oppression and revolt among humans and mythical creatures and is created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham. Furthermore,  the complete cast of the show includes Simon McBurney, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Andrew Gower, Karla Crome, Arty Froushan, Indira Varma, and Jared Harris.

The official synopsis of the series reads as

LOVE. MURDER. CONSPIRACY. REVOLUTION. WHEN MYSTERIOUS KILLINGS INFLAME TENSIONS BETWEEN THE FAEFOLK AND THEIR HUMAN OPPRESSORS, EACH DENIZEN OF CARNIVAL ROW MUST CHOOSE WHO THEY ARE AND HOW TO ACT.

-The Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 9-10 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

Carnival Row Season 2 Finale was nothing short of a spectacular showcase in ending a series on a high note. The last two episodes of the fantasy drama series had a lot of loose ends to tie, but the gripping plot managed to do so efficiently. The show’s visual effects simply stole the show towards the end and gave us one of the most satisfying send off to the series.

The episodes showcase the fae community’s struggles for their rights and Rycroft’s journey to build a world based on equal ideologies. The series ties up this arc by providing a worthy conclusion for its characters in Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 10.

The series also concludes on a positive note for Vignette and the fae community. Vignette finally gets the closure she deserves and decides to move on with her life. Her decision to stay and help her people acts as an inspiration for the fae community to stand up for their rights. Something which was thoroughly represented throughout the series.

Moreover, the episode also does justice to the parallel storyline of Imogen and Agreus’s love story, which felt slow in the earlier episodes. The ending of their story arc is satisfying and heartfelt. Notably, the climax of the episode also sees the titular character facing the grand mythical creature in a fight to the death. The entire battle scene is intense, and the writers did a brilliant job of showcasing the triumph factor. Rycroft’s miraculous victory against the creature and the politics is a moment of victory that itself manages to end things on a high note.

The visual effects in the final episodes are outstanding, and the showrunners deserve credit for their attention to detail. The creature design and the city’s visuals are stunning and help the viewers to dive deep into the world of Carnival Row.

The final monologue by Rycroft also forms one of the high moments of the series. It encapsulates the themes of the series and provides a sense of closure for us as an audience.
