In the next episode, the King will let Mong-woo live but with lots of conditions so that he can watch over him before he makes any moves. The King likes Mong-woo as he was very fond of him back then as a friend but now that he knows his grave mistakes will bring bad luck, he is stuck between compassion and cleverness. Hence, he will make Mong-woo the court’s baduk player and keep him under his watch. In fact that’s the reason why he summoned Myung-ha as well so that he can keep his possible enemies near him.

Mong-woo will not reveal the true identity but will continue disguised as a man. Mong-woo will ask Myung-ha to join hands in avenging the death of the people that the King caused. Of course Myung-ha will join with Mong-woo and start their plans. Meanwhile, Mong-woo will become closer to the King as he is deeply wounded inside and needs a true friend beside him.

Captivating the King Episode 5 Recap

The episode begins with Hee-soo practicing Baduk with her master, aiming to become Prince Doksaeng’s apprentice. When she finally returns to Joseon as Mong-woo, the Prince is mysteriously murdered. While it’s assumed that the King ordered the killing, we later discover that the Principal Director carried out the order. The King warns the Director subtly, revealing a tense dynamic.

The Queen Dowager attempts to have the King bear a son with one of the concubines, but he shows little interest. He only trusts the court lady Dong and keeps all other women at a distance. Following the Prince’s death, the King organizes a Baduk player competition to find someone to play with regularly. Simultaneously, he summons Myung-ha back to Joseon, appointing him as the sixth secretary with the crucial task of restoring the late brother’s peach tree.

No one has succeeded in the peach tree mission, but Myung-ha takes on the challenge with determination. The Queen Dowager worries about his return, fearing he might seek revenge for his father’s death. Meanwhile, Hee-soo, disguised as Mong-woo, participates in the Baduk player competition and keeps winning, catching Myung-ha’s attention. Despite his attempts to connect with her, she remains focused on the contest.

Learning about Mong-woo, the King attends the competition and challenges her to win and come to the palace. Otherwise, he threatens severe consequences. As expected, Mong-woo emerges victorious, becoming the official Baduk player of the palace. When she enters the King’s chamber, he confronts her, accusing her of returning for revenge and plotting to kill him. The episode concludes with both of them exchanging intense glares filled with anger.
