Bullet Train Explosion Ending Explained

The film starts with the passengers boarding the Hayabusa 60 Shinkansen full of different people from all over the country, their seemingly ordinary journey turns extraordinary when news reaches the train company that leaves everyone chilled – there’s a bomb on the train and it will go off if the speed falls below 100 km/h. The bigwigs at the company ask Conductors Takaichi and Fujii, along with driver Matsumoto, to keep the news to themselves in order not to cause a panic.

Unfortunately, the bomber releases this news to the internet soon after, leaving everyone on board frazzled. Afterwards, the passengers decide to come up with a way to crowd fund, although the government is unhappy with this initiative and even thinks about closing the donation page.

Soon after, Kasagi, the General Commander at the Shinkansen General Operation Control Centre, comes up with a plan to get the passengers from one train to another. After a gruelling few minutes wherein they decouple the last compartment and attach another train to themselves, the plan goes fairly smoothly, and a ton of people are transported to the other train. However, the crisis isn’t averted just yet.

Who is the bomber?

In the second half of the film, a sudden shocking information comes to light — young school student Yuzuki suddenly has a nasty fight with her father and tells him to look behind him. In a revelation that can only be called heartbreaking and unbelievable, she pulls a trigger on her phone and makes her entire house blow up, indicating that she had planted a bomb in the house.

After killing her father, she tells the passengers that she was the bomber and it can be stopped if they kill her by severing a heart minute wire that will automatically disconnect the bomb. The remaining passengers are left absolutely dumbfounded at this, and after learning how abusive her father was, Takaichi finds empathy for this poor girl.

Meanwhile, at mission control, they go through Yuzuki’s social media profiles and learn about her conversation with a man named Koga, who tells them that he used her hatred to get close to her and brainwash her into doing this in order to get revenge on Tsutomu Onodera. It is truly a surprising conclusion, and when asked in the end whether she regrets any of her actions, she mentions that she feels none because she did everything of her own free will.

After Yuzuki’s confession, Takaichi and the others decide to take it upon themselves to cause the least impact as mission control decides to stop the train on its path and hope for the best. In the shocking and entertaining final act, the train company decides to stop the train in its tracks, which results in their compartment from getting derailed. Thankfully, because of the padding they created around themselves and a little bit of plot armour, everyone comes out in one piece. In the Bullet Train Explosion final sequence, everyone cheers for Takaichi and Matsumoto for a job well done as Yuzuki is taken away by the police after receiving first aid.
