Black Doves Review
The thing about spy thrillers is that they have become quite stale. Unless it’s completely reinvented in some way, there’s very little scope of it actually making a mark in your heart and even less to entertain you. Surprisingly enough, Netflix’s Black Doves somehow is able to do both, leaving us to press the next episode button the moment one ends so that we can learn what happens next without wasting a minute.
The spy thriller is able to balance various different things well without batting an eye and flows from one thing to another in a deliciously twisted way, leaving us to soak in the entertainment pouring out of every minute. I love the fact that while both Helen and Sam are ruthless spies, underneath it all is an emotional core that adds an extra layer of interest to the series.

Both of these characters are well-written and well-executed, so much so that following and relating to them is extremely simple. We are so used to seeing these nameless, suave killing machines who can presumably do anything and charm anyone. However, the protagonists of this thriller series are human beings at the end of the day – they make normal mistakes and live to regret them. there’s something very genuine behind their feelings that feels raw and all is not a lie with these people. It’s a refreshing change of pace.
Moreover, Kiera Knightly and Ben Whishaw are surprisingly humorous in the series, which is always surprising. There’s a wit in the humour that is infectious and although you don’t burst out laughing, it makes you chuckle fairly consistently. That’s not always achievable in spy thrillers like these, but this one is able to do it quite naturally, leaving us to experience this series in a surprisingly tender, funny way.
The action of Black Doves is also its highlight. It’s smooth, it’s well choreographed and it’s a delight to watch. Everyone brings their A-game to the table and the acting is so spot-on that one can’t look away from the screen. On top of that, the series brings a twisted story that encompasses a slew of different topics that will interest a wide range of viewers. The fantastic performances just add to all of this to make the series fantastic.
Final Thoughts

Black Doves is highly entertaining and has everything that you want in a spy-thriller in all the right amounts, resulting in a nail-biting experience. The performances are fantastic and the twists are excellent, and along with some great emotional moments, this one is definitely a must-watch this month.
