As Priyanka Chopra turns 40 today, we all have one question in mind – How has this darling actress who gained fame at the young age of 18, evolved over more than two decades in the public eye. Any keen observer of the Indian entertainment scene will know that the style and sophistication that Priyanka Chopra Jonas has become synonymous with today was not always present at the same level.
From the time of her debut in the entertainment industry till today, Priyanka’s fashion has changed and evolved to adapt to the dominant trends as well as blend with her changing personal style. So, let us look into the curious case of Priyanka’s fashion evolution.
Priyanka Chopra was first noticed in pageantry. After winning a local beauty pageant, her mother signed her up for the Femina Miss India 2000 pageant. She finished second, giving her entry into the Miss World 2000 pageant. As we all know, Priyanka won the Miss World 2000 pageant and thus, got noticed by the Indian entertainment industry.
PC’s beautiful, glittering strapless gown which she wore at the 2000 Miss World contest was (wait for it) held together by tapes! The actress shared in November 2020 that the gown was taped to her during the contest and by the end, near the crowing moment, it was almost about to come off. Well, gladly it did not and we got to see the fabulous actor in more iconic looks in the years to come.

The 2000’s for Priyanka were the years she was making her mark in Bollywood. She debuted in the Indian entertainment industry in 2002 with the Tamil language film, Thamizhan, making her Bollywood debut in 2003 with the film, The Hero : Love Story of a Spy.
Although starring in multiple films at the time, Priyanka did not really make a significant impact until Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, which was a box-office hit. The 2004 thriller Aitraaz really got Priyanka noticed for her acting capabilities.
Like her movies at the time, PC’s fashion also faltered. Her wardrobe typically consisted of what was trending at the time – body hugging, size zero clothes, frosted and over-lined lips, hair worn straight, with beach waves or in loose braids, etcetera, etcetera. None of her looks at the time were so different or iconic from what her contemporaries were doing.
As the years went on, not only did we see more mature and experimental performances by Priyanka on screen, but also off screen, on talk shows and red carpets. Her fashion went from a version of what everyone was doing to a blend of the most current trends with her own sense of style.

One need only look at this picture of the actress in four appearances on the popular Bollywood talk show Koffee with Karan to see how her style has evolved over time to become something more assertive and self-reflective.
All that being said, however, it would be necessary to mention that Priyanka began to truly gain steam as a fashion icon when she started her Hollywood journey. In late 2014, Priyanka signed a talent holding deal with ABC Studios, officially throwing her hat in the fire pit of the American film industry. Since then, she slowly began appearing on red carpets of various international events.
Making her debut on the international red carpets at the 2016 People’s Choice Award, PeeCee wore a sequined Vera Wang dress that sparkled almost as brightly as the award she won that evening for Quantico. Not to mention, that same year, Priyanka won the Padma Shri award and her lemon yellow saree was the classic PC blend of taste and elegance.
For the Oscars in 2016, she wore the ICONIC Zuhair Murad white bustier dress that arguably first got her onto many-a best dressed lists. Her 2016, Jason Wu, Emmy gown which sparked rumors of a secret romance with Tom Hiddleston and a beef with Taylor Swift, was another jewel on the glistening (Miss World) crown.

Priyanka appeared at the Met Gala three times so far (2017, 2018 and 2019). Of all her Met looks, the 2019 “Camp” themed look stood out as the most eccentric. The Dior Couture gown was unlike anything she had worn before or since but, it showed Priyanka’s commitment to the Met Gala themes.
Also, how can one forget the gown in which she went from Priyanka Chopra to Priyanka Chopra Jonas? The stunning Ralph Lauren gown had a 75-foot tulle train that could make Kate Middleton blush.
Although Nick Jonas and Priyanka’s long, multi-event wedding ceremony saw the actress dawn many unforgettable pieces, like her red Sabyasachi lehenga (worn for her Indian wedding), this dress was the one that elevated the wedding from a regular celebrity affair to an out right royal entertainment industry wedding.
In more recent times, Priyanka has worn everything from Halpern to Ferragamo and Ralpn and Russo. Priyanka’s red carpet outfits are usually form-fitting yet elegant, most of the times paired with an exaggerated train.
Meanwhile, her everyday “out in the media” outfits are more playful and experimental with different colours, cuts and silhouettes which always seem to complement her beautifully.
As she hits 40 today, we wonder how her style will evolve further. She certainly has come a long way from the 18-year-old Miss World winner who followed the vogue of the era to the bold and confident woman who is not scared to experiment with her looks and appearance.
