This Netflix true-crime documentary film showcases the baffling laundering of nearly 120,000 Bitcoin and the surprising arrest of hipster rapper Heather R. Morgan, aka Razzlekhan, and her husband Ilya Lichtenstein in relation to it.

The thing with true crime documentaries is viewers, more often than not, know the end results which can dampen the thrill of watching an insane crime unfold. Thus, the onus falls on how the tale is told and with Biggest Heist Ever, the story and storytelling are so deliciously juicy that nothing else is required to be thoroughly entertained. My favourite part was the promise of a bigger conspiracy, but that is a discussion for a later paragraph.

The 2016 Bitfinex scam was truly one of the biggest hacks of the time, one that did not require anyone to threaten a bank employee to hand over funds. Overnight, your wallet just stopped having whatever you had deposited in it. To put salt in the wound, one might be able to see where the stolen funds are but won’t be able to access them in any way. Biggest Heist Ever is a rollercoaster of a story, showcasing the ups and downs of Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein and how cringy YouTube videos aren’t always indicative of a person’s/couple’s true nature.

The documentary film is able to put a ton of information into its short runtime, so much so that the pacing is fantastic and keeps you on your toes. The film runs the moment you hit play, taking you on a journey through the murky waters of crypto trading and the dark web. The heist story itself is an interesting topic, one that the documentary takes time to discuss and dissect. Viewers who are not familiar with the world of crypto won’t find themselves lost and, in fact, might find themselves learning a few key things. It’s told succinctly and entertainingly, so much so that viewers don’t lose interest.

The most interesting of the lot, however, are the two key players of this heist, who turn out to be much more sinister than their clean internet persona. The film gives us enough of their life story to help us connect the dots, yet you can’t help but want to know more about them afterwards. These two are an enigma of human beings and, long after the runtime ends, I couldn’t help but wonder who these people really are. The documentary makes the two aspects of this story come together excellently and the testimonies from law enforcement and friends just add a layer of intrigue.

However, it’s a bit weird that we didn’t see a little more discussion surrounding Bitfinex’s role in the scam and its inability to take accountability and reimburse victims appropriately. It’s sad to see so many victims lose so much money without much recourse. I think a little bit more discussion surrounding this topic would’ve shed a little more light on the situation.

Final Thoughts

All in all, I found myself absolutely thrilled while watching this documentary. Although true crime is always fascinating, viewers might find it almost impossible to get the Razzlekhan persona to coincide with a billion-dollar scam artist. This one will be a thoroughly entertaining watch that viewers will get a kick out of.
