Bet Your Life Review

The plot of the show follows a sports betting journalist whose falling career and loan sharks push him into a tricky situation. To make matters worse, the ghost of a man said to have committed suicide is stuck to him, asking him to help find his killer. With no way out, he travels back to his hometown and begins to discover hidden truths, crime, and a love story in the making.

The show is without a doubt quirky for most of the parts and entertaining for the others, however, I have found the comedy to be lacking for something with the tag. I couldn’t find myself laughing for most of the show, and Isa’s quirkiness really doesn’t do well for the show either. Meanwhile, his quick thinking and curious mind do make a good connection to his journalism background, and you can see that this personality has been created according to the set stereotypes for the profession itself.

However, I have enjoyed the fantasy part of the film which connects Isa’s quirkiness to a whole other mystic appearance that stems from local beliefs and magic. This touch of fantasy keeps you intrigued, making me love how he reconnects with his true self through the journey of this mystery-solving. Let us agree, this story is all about second chances, be it for the ghost, for Seda, or for Isa himself as he finds himself connecting with the powers of his father.

The most intriguing part of the show, on the other hand, has to be the crime mystery which has truly kept me interested until the end. It surely wasn’t easy to find the culprit until the final episode and this nagging mystery is what held me for most of the show. I have loved how they create the background, have us unveil the many secrets of the ghost and finally give us the real culprit. And I also love how this doesn’t come out of nowhere like the click of a button, but through the many expressions of Isa himself.

Altogether, the Turkish show goes beyond my expectations for sure as it brings an intriguing mystery show. But the lack of any real comedy despite it calling itself a comedy was quite the letdown, especially when I knew that there was enough room for it.

Summing Up

Bet Your Life is an interesting crime mystery series that smoothly plays out a good murder mystery that we have witnessed one too many times. Despite following the traditional route, it manages to bring us something unique through its mystical elements, keeping viewers intrigued for a long time. However, do not be fooled by the comedy tag because you won’t find much of that.

Watch Bet Your Life on Netflix.
