Barracuda Queens Review: Rich Girls From a First World Country Take Control of Their Narrative

Barracuda Queens Review: Netflix is back with yet another show about rich girls doing questionable things, and this time, it doesn’t completely suck. The series is created by Camilla Ahlgren and directed by Amanda Adolfsson. It stars Alva Bratt, Tea Stjärne, Sarah Gustafsson, Sandra Strandberg Zubovic, Tindra Monsen, Izabella Scorupco, Carsten Bjørnlund, Editha Domingo, Mirja Turestedt, Michaela Thorsén and Max Ulveson, alongside other cast members. The series is written by Sofie Forsman, Tove Forsman, and Veronica Zacco and consists of six episodes, each ranging from 30-35 minutes in duration.

Barracuda Queens Review

Shows like these have a similar draft. What initially starts off as innocent eventually becomes something more sinister. However, when the title card explained that the show is based on some true events, it increased some of the intrigue for the writer. While the story is incredibly predictable and doesn’t inspire any conscious thought, there are aspects of the series that make it somewhat interesting.

The fact that one of the main characters is openly queer and shares a moment with the other character is a win for representation. However, the thing that truly saves this series from drifting into oblivion is the initial motivation for their crimes. We see that most of their actions came out of understandable female rage at things around them and people who were pretending to be something they were not. Obviously, there are some extremely problematic elements in this series that we cannot excuse, even though the characters are doing their best to make the best out of their ridiculous situations.

Let’s speak of the characters for a few minutes. Even though the writers and creators had the time to explore a longer story, they didn’t motivate every character to explore their actions. While they subtly make sense (if you think about it way too much), it doesn’t actually come through in how it is presented on screen. Furthermore, rooting for the rich girls who have been stealing from their own elite friends seems extremely cringy. There is absolutely no intrigue in this kind of narrative.

At least the timing is great. Since the late 90s are coming back in terms of fashion and accessories, we see something similar coming back in this show. Their clothes and their opulence make up for all the plot inconsistencies and general lack of mystery. The heist genre has not been any more boring than this. Even though they had some cool symbolism in the series, there wasn’t any plot point that made it come alive in a way that the viewers would like.

Moreover, the writing wasn’t any better. If it had to be so predictable, at least the dialogues and the character dynamics should have made up for the rest. However, that didn’t happen either. Similarly, even the cinematography is lacking in the department, at least in making the shots interesting. Overall, this series can be slotted into something average that will be forgotten. Netflix releases so much content it isn’t hard to say that most of it is average, with only some standing out clearly in its large roster.

Final Thoughts

This writer recommends that people not watch the show. Unless they enjoy watching rich girls doing rich girl things, it doesn’t have anything interesting going for it. The ending, too, was so anti-climactic. It was all tied up so neatly that there was truly nothing left to rally behind in the series. If there were consequences or any other kind of ongoing conflict, the story would have created some kind of sizzle for the viewers.

The problem with content like this is that the writer cannot elaborate any further on this because there is nothing left to talk about. Mediocrity is such a common theme in streaming content that this will just blend into the other content on the myriad of current streaming platforms.

  1. This is rich, bored, white girl problems that are so Colonial with the way they treat immigrants is pathetic.

Every person of color got fired or deported and even the black female cop was made to look incompetent, because the money bought thier freedom. Flat, empty series. Will never watch another season if one comes out.
