Ayushmann Khurrana on Audience Being Selective About Watching Movies in Theatres, Being a Risktaker and More

Ayushmann Khurrana is all geared up for his third release of 2022 – An Action Hero. Directed by Anirudh Iyer, we will see the Doctor G actor in a never-before-seen mode. After enlightening and entertaining the audience with various significant social issues, Khurrana is now ready to kick some a**. He will be seen in an action film for the first time, fighting the very talented Jaideep Ahlawat.

As seen in the An Action Hero trailer, Ayushmann plays a superstar named Maanav. Jaideep plays Bhoora Solanki, who wants to avenge his brother’s death. Bhoora’s brother was a big fan of Maanav and died while trying to meet his favourite actor. It’s a cat-and-mouse chase, and the trailer promises lots of action and thrills while shedding light on some important issues the film industry has dealt with.

Ayushmann Khurrana movies always offer us something out of the box. His social comedy and entertaining movies have received great love in the past. However, after the pandemic, the audience has become selective about watching a movie in the theatre. The year 2022 saw many big movies struggling at the box office. During a group interaction, I asked Ayushmann about his observation and understanding of everything that happened with movies in 2022 and what is something that will work for cine-goers who expect escapism in movies and not always intense stories.

Ayushmann Khurrana in Article 15 – One of his Best Films

Ayushmann answers, “I have understood that it has to be for a wider audience. The family audience should love that. Since we are talking about community viewing, the entire family should enjoy (the movie). We cannot test the patience of the audience anymore. Everything is on your mobile right now. It’s not just OTT, it’s also Instagram and social media; our main competition is social media and reels. The attention span is 15 seconds and we have to challenge ourselves to make it last two hours. So I think that’s the real challenge.”

He adds, “If you achieve that, if we engage the audience for two hours without a blink, that with be the true victory and also to know the right audience for the right medium. There are conspiracy theories that there has to be a visual experience. But there have been smaller films that are doing well. Uunchai is doing decently well right now. Kantara did really well. It’s not a KGF, but it still did well. So it’s the audience engagement overall, the film should offer.” He also said that good is not enough now; we have to make great content.

An Action Hero director Anirudh Iyer called Ayushmann the bravest actor in Bollywood. Ayushmann also believes in taking risks while choosing his movies. He was asked what joy he gets while taking risks in his career, especially when many avoid doing it. The actor states, “I take one step at a time, one day at a time. But one thing is for sure that that is history will be kind to me.”

“Whenever I look back for years, I will be noticed as the first person to do a certain subject or choose a certain film. So I think that’ll be very helpful,” states the actor. Khurrana also shared that he would love to explore the horror-comedy genre and is open to doing web shows.
