Asian Academy Creative Awards 2022 announced their grand winners last evening and Netflix won big by receiving 8 awards across several titles from India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. With the year coming to an end, Netflix India once again showcased its incredible stories and give a voice to multiple performers globally in 2022.
Being a platform that hosts a multitude of genres, making sure to bring those untold stories to life, Netflix India’s films and series have won global audiences’ love and bagged multiple international accolades around the world. Held in Singapore, Indian content such as House of Secrets: the Burari Deaths, Mai: A Mother’s Rage, Minnal Murali and Thar stood out for their incredible stories, direction, acting and screenplay at the ACAA this year.
Basil Joseph, Director of Minnal Murali won the Best Direction (Fiction) award and Shreya Dev Dube won the Best Cinematography award for Thar. Asia’s most recognized award for creative excellence, The Asian Academy Creative Awards have been established to honour content from across 16 APAC countries.

Minnal Murali is set in the 90s, the film is an origin story of Jaison, an ordinary man turned superhero struck by the bolt of lightning that bestows superpowers. Murali soon realizes he is not the only one with these superpowers in the village. While Thar is a story inspired by the Western Noir genre based on Siddharth who embarks on a journey to avenge his past.
Talking about his win as the Best Director (Fiction) for Minnal Murali, Basil Joseph shares, “There have been tons of superhero stories in the past and creating one with a new story and vision was challenging to say the least. The Asian Academy Creative Award recognising my work and praising it has showcased my success in doing so. It has been a joyride to work with such incredible actors, producers, writers and Netflix, who supported my vision and brought it to life in such a beautiful manner. You are only as good as your team, and I am elated to have worked with such a beautiful one.”
On winning the award for Best Cinematography for Thar, Shreya Dev Dube says, “I am elated to have received the award for Best Cinematography for Thar amongst such impeccable films from around the globe. Working with Netflix on this film has been a treat and I look forward to many such projects in the future. I am so grateful to the producer, director and the entire cast and crew for entrusting me with the story and bringing it to life on reel. Lastly, I am thankful to Netflix for giving Thar a platform to reach global audiences.”
Netflix wins big for the following titles and categories: India won two awards for Minnal Murali in Best Direction (Fiction) category & Thar for Best Cinematography. Japan also won two awards for Asakusa Kid in the Best Feature Film category & Bubble in Best Animated Programme or Series (2D or 3D).
Netflix Korea won three awards for D.P. in Best Actor in Leading Role – Jung Hae-In, Twenty Five Twenty One in Branded ex Korea for Best Drama Series and Our Blues for Branded ex Korea Best Screenplay. Lastly Netflix Taiwan won one award for Light the Night in Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Wu Kang-Ren.
