Apple TV+ Series Shantaram: Release Date, Trailer, Cast and More

The upcoming action crime series Shantaram is about a Fugitive named Lin Lord, who escapes and hides in Bombay during the 1980s. The series encapsulates his struggle to live in a completely new city and culture, followed by his dilemma of choosing love over freedom. It stars Charlie Hunnam in the lead role of the protagonist.

The series will have a total of twelve episodes and will be directed by Justin Kurze, Bharat Nalluri, and Ian B Macdonald. Moreover, the project is adapted from a novel of the same name by Australian author Gregory David Roberts. Steve Lightfoot will serve as the showrunner of the series and the series will be produced by Anonymous Content and Paramount Television Studios.

The rest of the supporting cast includes Antonia Desplat, Elektra Kilbey, Sujaya Dasgupta, Alexander Siddig, Elham Ehsas, Fayassal Bazzi, Shubham Saraf, Mel Odedrea, Monica Kumar, Arka Das, Vincent Perez, Suraj Kolarkar, Alvin Maharaj and Ganesh Salian. The series will be distributed by Apple Inc.

Shantaram Plot/Storyline

The plot of the series revolves around the journey of protagonist Lindsay Lin. A convicted bank robber in Australia escapes to India, to hide and remain away from the heat of the crime. Eventually, he befriends one of the locals name Prabakar, who shows him around and introduces him to the slum. The place where Lin ultimately ends up living.

Lindsay feels that he has left the life of crime, but the wrongdoings keep chasing him for more trouble. After living in the slum area, he gets attached to the people and special individuals. And when he finds them in trouble, he must choose between a life of peace and standing up for others.

Eventually, his decision lands him in grave danger and Lin comes face to face with his fate. The only way forward for him is redemption and confronting the past.

The series will premiere as an episodic release, with each new episode released on Friday. Moreover, the first three episodes will drop simultaneously on the streaming platform.

Notably, the production of the series began in 2019 and was shot in Australia in the month of October. It was also scheduled to be shot in Bhopal and Madhyapradesh. However, after the Covid Outbreak, the shoot was shifted ahead, and the principal photography was completed in 2021.
