Angela Lansbury, a versatile actress and singer who played various roles across film, stage, and television and wowed generations of fans through some memorable roles, died on Tuesday, at the age of 96.
“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday,” her family said in a statement.
She was one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema at the time of her death; and has received an Honorary Oscar Award, 3 Oscar nominations, 18 Emmy nominations, 1 Grammy nomination, 6 Golden Globe Awards, and 5 Tony Awards, along with the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2022.

From leading roles in the stage musicals Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, and The King and I, to the hit Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks in 1971, she made her mark right from the start. She achieved worldwide fame as a fictional writer and sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the series Murder, She Wrote, which ran for twelve seasons.
She voiced the sentimental Mrs Pott, in the 1991 musical Beauty and the Beast, which scored as one of the popular movie’s most beloved moments. Referencing the lyrics to the animated film’s theme, NASA even paid tribute to Lansbury by posting a photo of a cosmic rose, in her honour.
Even since the news of her demise is known to the public, many acquaintances and other people are sharing their fondest memories together. Many are sharing live video clips of the melodious singer, gracing the stage in various theatre plays and performances.
In the 1960s, The New York Times referred to Lansbury as the ‘First Lady of Musical Theatre.’ She even described herself as an actress who also could sing, with Sondheim stating that she had a strong voice, albeit with a limited range. Angela Lansbury’s final film role was a cameo appearance in Rian Johnson’s 2022 detective drama Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
It wouldn’t be a lie to call her a legend whose work will be adorned by the masses for the years to come. She defined the essence of being a legend, as her contribution to the films and arts will be remembered as one of the greatest.
