Agent Zeta Review

Agent Zeta, much like any preconceived notion you might have, follows a rather tried-and-tested espionage script about an introverted spy going off the deep end to investigate why three other spies were simultaneously murdered. With one of them still alive and a shadowy operation from the past connecting them all together, he tries to figure out what could’ve compelled these people to resort to murder all of these years.

We get the answer after about 2 hours, after going through a lot (and, I mean a LOT) of exposition dump and flashbacks about secret spy stuff that isn’t anything new at this point. And I don’t even mean the big names in spy thrillers here; every other show or film that is remotely anything close to the genre does something like this now, and it’s gotten a bit tiring after the 10th watch.

The one thing that I will give Agent Zeta is that the production quality is fantastic. It looks and feels absolutely thrilling, although the script doesn’t come close to what the production delivers. Riddled with cliches, it makes you wonder what could’ve been, as everything else in the film is quite ambitious and well-done. The dark shadows that follow the characters highlight just how much danger everyone is in and the seriousness of the situation, but in the foreground, it’s probably the fifth flashback that you’re being made to watch.

On that note, the performances, too, are fantastic. Mario Casas and Luis Zahera are the backbone of the film, and both are fantastic in their roles. If the story wasn’t this disappointing, this could’ve been a truly memorable experience. Casas and Zahera, both individually and together, make for some memorable sequences in the film. Zahera, especially, is memorable in this cliched mess and carries an air of superiority that really gives his character weight.

In the end, there’s not a lot to say about Agent Zeta. It focuses more on negotiations and espionage than action, which might have been a thrilling watch. However, the film feels boring and slow because there are so many sequences where people reminisce and think about the past that not only bloat the runtime but also don’t add any thrill or anticipation. Rather, you watch as we learn more new information endlessly, leaving you restless and bored.

As a result, the twists and turns don’t feel gripping. The film fails to create a tense situation and instead focuses on worldbuilding throughout its runtime. Thus, you never quite get out of learning about these characters and into actually doing something.

Final Thoughts

In the end, Agent Zeta is disappointing despite some great cinematography and performances because it focuses more on telling what happened like a school lesson, rather than showing us through actual detective work. Our protagonist doesn’t have to do anything to get any of the information – he simply has to ask people, and they dump information on him. It’s a boring watch that leaves you restless instead of thrilling you with twists and turns.
