The story opens with Elena and Vanessa going shopping, who are free-spirited girls and a little rebellious. Elena convinced Vanessa to shoplift, which revealed Elena’s bold and careless character. Later, after school hours, they went to school to check their results of the exams. Vanessa passed, but Elena did not. This made them disappointed because it threatened the separation of the best friends. The tension leads the two girls into an argument, but it also showcases their strong relationship.

The following day is Vanessa’s birthday, and her boyfriend has planned a party for her, and Elena promised to come. But waking up on her birthday, she finds that Elena has not even texted her or arrived. Later on, Vanessa also comes to know that Elena didn’t report to her restaurant job either, due to which Elena’s parents become worried. Others just brushed aside the fact by saying it was something usual for Elena as she used to speak about running away often.

At the birthday party, Vanessa tries to distract herself, but her thoughts keep drifting to Elena. Feeling unwell, she leaves the party with her boyfriend, Luigi. In his car, she finds an earring that she and Elena had stolen during their shopping trip. Shocked, Vanessa questions Luigi about how Elena’s earring ended up in his car. Luigi reveals that he lent his car to Giorgio, Vanessa’s cousin.

Giorgio is challenged by Vanessa, and he reveals that Elena had been his girlfriend and that he had actually dropped her at school after they had a fight with her. Giorgio claims that he did not hurt Elena; however, this confession makes him a prime suspect. Days later, Elena’s body is discovered in the schoolyard, and the entire case becomes a manhunt for her murderer.

Who Was Responsible for Elena’s Disappearance?

The day before her birthday, Elena spent her time with her boyfriend, Enrico. She had already told Vanessa that she intended to spend the night with Enrico. However, in an attempt to be reunited with Giorgio whom she is secretly seeing, she spent the night with him instead of Enrico. She talked about running away from her life but he refused, unwilling to leave his family behind. The conversation escalated into an argument, and Elena stormed off to the school building. Giorgio tried to keep following her but was yelled at by Elena to leave her alone.

Enrico then came on the scene. Upon seeing Elena in the arms of Giorgio, Enrico is jealous and enraged. He confronted Elena; from within, it is revealed that Elena was being abused by Enrico. His anger reached boiling, and he strangled Elena, killing her by accident.

Her mother eventually discovered his connection when she found a letter in their mailbox that stated Enrico had been within the area where Elena’s body was discovered. Overwhelmed with guilt, Enrico admitted to his mother that he killed Elena and that his father assisted him in hiding it. Filled with too much remorse to carry it around, his mother reported him to the police, which ultimately led to his detention.

What Happened to Giorgio?

Throughout the investigation, Giorgio becomes a primary suspect due to his secret relationship with Elena and his suspicious behaviour. He admits to being with Elena on the night of her disappearance but insists he dropped her off at the school and had no part in her death. Despite his claims, his erratic actions such as abusing Melissa his girlfriend, paint him in a negative light, further implicating him in the eyes of the police.

Giorgio’s internal struggles stem from his guilt over his involvement in Elena’s turbulent life and his fear of being wrongfully accused. Ultimately, his innocence is proven when Enrico confesses to the crime. While the series leaves Giorgio’s fate ambiguous, it suggests he may have been released following Enrico’s arrest.

The Italian series Adoration is now streaming on Netflix.
