Accused Review

In Netflix’s newest psychological thriller film, we see a renowned gynaecologist’s life unravelling when she is accused of sexual misconduct at work. Her homosexuality becomes a talking point in the ordeal as well, as we watch her trying to prove her innocence and her romantic relationship facing the brunt of the situation.

The film starts off strong, as we watch a crime allegedly being committed by our protagonist who behaves a bit too sketchily to be believed. Sen Sharma’s Geetika is fierce and unflinching and doesn’t give space for us to trust her completely because she’s so combative and secretive. While there is no proof of her misconduct, the entire situation being based on a bunch of anonymous accusations, her shifty nature doesn’t help things for the viewers.

This adds to the intensity of the situation as you wait with bated breath to see what the truth is. This is where the film shines, as it creates a good mystery for us to wade through as the domestic tension between Geetika and Meera adds to the emotional weight of the film. However, what starts off strong ends up tapering off after the first half, as it starts to feel like the writers forgot to think about a tense conflict that would make sense for the storyline.

Suddenly, we see a random person emerge who takes responsibility for the mess, while the mystery is solved a bit too conveniently out of the blue, leaving us to feel like all this buildup was for nothing. I found myself rather disheartened as the film rushed through the half-hearted conclusion, ending on an obvious note where Geetika talks about power and how she let it get to her head and whatnot. Plus, the conflict between Geetika and Meera also gets solved in the blink of an eye, without doing a proper job of actually walking through the problem.

From the moment the film was announced, Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Rannta’s pairing has been quite the hype, and I found myself rather intrigued with them as well. Unfortunately, I don’t think the film does a good job of actually giving the two enough time to showcase their relationship. They talk to each other a lot, but we don’t believe them to be a couple other than them doing a few things that couples might do. I didn’t feel their chemistry, and neither did I believe their conflict and eventual reunion one bit.

However, I will say that it’s nice to see creators at least attempting to do something different, even if they don’t land. Accused stands apart from Netflix India’s last few releases, with its queer relationship, the woman being accused of sexual misconduct and a workplace thriller that is far too relatable. Although it doesn’t stick the landing, I will give it credit for bringing something fresh to our screens instead of rehashing the same-old story over and over again.

Final Thoughts

Accused is fine, I will give it credit for trying to do something different. However, the film isn’t able to hold on to the tension that it creates in the first half, and the conclusion lacks punch and freshness. It’s all very convenient and lazy, in my opinion, and left me quite disappointed by the end of it.
